Why does only Toyota make Hybrid cars?

With the current gas prices, I would seriously consider a hybrid car,
if I could afford a new car (which I can't).  I just drive an old
beater and keep fixing it till I finally have to replace it with
another beater.

But, even if I was able to afford a hybrid car, I would NOT buy a
Toyota.  First, I prefer to support American businesses, particularly
with large purchases.  Second, the parts for foreign cars are always
extremely high.  Third, a friend of mine had a Toyota, and he was
constantly paying large amounts of money on repairs.  He finally took
a huge loss and junked it, and said he would never buy anything made
by Toyota.

If I could afford a hybrid car, I would buy one, but it would NOT be a
Toyota.  When is GM or Ford, or Chrysler going to start making
hybrids?

They do.  GM has a Silverado pickup.  Ford has the Escape.  Honda has an
Accord hybrid and their (very ugly, imo)  Insight (which seems on and off
their sale's board).

Honda has (or had) a Civic hybrid as well.  The economics still don't
justify the added cost for purchase of the hybrid though.  Once can buy
quite a bit of gas (about 12-15 years worth on average) to cover the added
cost of the Hybrid vehicle over it's standard fuel counterpart.

Ha!  Try telling that to the Canadian taxi cab driver who saves over $900
**PER MONTH **  with his 2004 Prius.

Paraphrase:
"Compared to conventional taxis, his current 2004 Prius saves between $900
and $1,100 per month in fuel costs alone, and his repair bills -- thanks to
automotive innovations such as regenerative braking, which reduces wear and
tear on the brake pads -- have been cut by more than half."

So the Yellow Cab of British Columbia, Canada's largest cab company, thinks
it's bad economic sense to own one?  Add the uncertainty (okay, the
certainty) that fuel will rise and they will save far more.
