i got a 2000 mazda protege.  for a couple months now, i've had a
somewhat loud screeching noise from the front end.  it is intermittent
and 2 different places said they can't do anything without hearing it,
and of course it doesn't do it when i want to.  it happens when hitting
the gas, take foot off and noise stops; does it again when hitting gas.
somedays it doesn't do it at all.  from what i've read in other posts,
it usually points to a loose/worn belt.  i had the alternator belt
replaced and later tightened and it didn't fix the problem.  could it
be the belt for the power steering/ac?  any other possibilities?

If it started jsut after alter. belt replacement, could be an el cheapo
belt was installed--they stretch and sometimes absolutely refuse to tighten
properly, even after several readjustments.  Good belts won't do that.
Te determine if it's the ac belt, when it starts screeching, turn off
the ac control.  If noise stops, and re-appears as soon as ac control is
reset, then the ac belt is the culprit.  Then, inspect, and adjust/replace
as necessary(using a name-brand, like Gates).   HTH, s

the noise started before the alt belt was replaced; the noise was what
prompted the belt replacement in the first place.  and it happens when
the ac is not on.  weather is cooling off here and won't need ac much
anymore, but noise is still there; so if it does it with ac off, it
probably isn't that?

Be very CAREFUL as you try this.  With engine idling, hold a file
against each side of the v-belt & let it *grind* a rough edge on each
side(not top & bottom!) of the belt.  REMEMBER!  GREAT CARE!  If it was that
belt causing the noise, it should stop for a while--like a few miles or few
days of driving.  If not, try the other belt.  If that was the bad one, IT
should quieten temporarily.  Adjust or replace with a good belt if you
determine a belt to be the source.  Luck & good outcome AFTER USING DUE
CAUTION.  s

do you think its a belt? you can try the no squeel spray (thoe a real
pain to clean up) and see if it stops. Ive had trannys whine like a
belt when something has been really wrong (he said steps on gas, dont
know if in gear or out).

i forgot to mention, there was lube put on it before the belt was
replaced; noise came back in a couple days.  i only think it's the belt
because i ask around and i'm hearing it's a good possibility.  one
other person said maybe ball joint?
