as i understand, sump oil sits at the bottom of the engines cyclinder,
where the crankshaft and so forth is spinning around under the piston.
what is the sump oil for? is it a purely lubricating fluid? to prevent
overheating of the engine parts? cheers

no worries. i found it on howstuffworks.com apparently it does
lubraicate. gets collected at the bottom, passed around and is squirted
into the cylinders to keep things smooth.

It's the place you put the french fries to cook them. If you get
stranded out in the "sticks" and can not drive the car, take that bag
of frozen french fries that you just purchased at the grocer and place
them in the engine sump. Start the engine and the fries will cook in
the oil. Many stranded victims have survived out in the wilderness
this way.
