Does anyone know what could be  causing the exhaust to smell so bad on my
1986 Ford E-150?

Had one until last year. The carbs are noted for dumping gas. See if
the cat is glowing red when you smell the gas. I went through a couple
of rebuilts until I finally did it myself with a kit.

Thanks
I checked the cat it is not glowing red.
It doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold.
It smells so bad I can't hardly stand beside it.
