Applied belt dressing to serpentine, how to remove?

Hi, I'm posting for a friend with no PC. He mistakenly applied belt dressing
to the serpentine belt on his early 90's Lincoln Continental (forgot which
exact year he has). The car only has about 70,000 miles or so, I believe.
Now there's a fairly loud "ching-ching-ching-ching-ching" sound. He says the
belt contracted. What is his remedy short of getting the serpentine belt
replaced? Any easy way to remove the belt dressing and it's effects? Thanks
much.

Isn't that what belt dressing is for??????

I must say that I have never found the stuff to work very well though.

I'd imagine any solvent would remove it.  Gasoline, laquer thinner,
etc.  If you want to completely get rid of it, you probably got to
remove it from the pulleys too, and have to turn them a half turn to
get the part the belt was touching.

He said the dressing is for the other belts, but not supposed to be used on
the serpentine.

if the belt has 70k miles on it, it should be replaced anyway. he is only
playing with fire running a belt that old.

OK, but why should that matter?  Aren't all belts created equal?
Curious !!!!

On some belts, using some kind(s) of dressing, it will cause a noise
that closely mimics a noisy p-steering pump.  Needless to say, changing the
pump did not help one bit!  Costly, but I remember!  My thinking would be
that a serpentine belt should need no dressing.  HTH, s

The belt is now dead.

Oh My God !!!

Does that mean a hearse is needed, and a coffin, and undertaker?
How Sad !!!
I was just about to have an enjoyable weekend when you posted this
depressing news.  My weekend is now ruined !

Of course there is always 911 and a team of paramedics.  One never
knows when there is still hope, unless there is no longer a heartbeat.

I'll say some prayers !!!

Where do I send the Sympathy card?
