strange starting problem

ad libitum - 28 Nov 2005 14:36 GMT This morning, I went out to start my wifes car, it cranked two or three times, I let off, then went to crank again and there was nothing. I tried jumping it, thinking maybe the battery died but that seemed to do nothing.
Then I noticed that while the lights, annoying ding, and other stuff worked, the dash clock, heater, radio, power windows, etc.. did absolutely nothing no matter how the key was turned. I checked the fuses under the dash and near the battery, what else could be causing this?
Mike Romain - 28 Nov 2005 14:53 GMT A dirty main battery cable end can cause that. Don't forget that the cables have 2 ends...
I would start on the ground cables, but the power cable could be bad where it joins the power distribution center or where the fuse links hook up. On some that is at the starter, some have a box with relays and some have a relay or solenoid. I would be checking the power wire at that first connection from the battery.

For more detail, it's a 92 Hyundai Elantra. Started and ran until this morning, tried starting this morning even (no slow cranking or anything like a low charge battery, just stopped altogether) New starter (2months or so, 2nd in 2 years) Battery is about a year old.
If you put the key in, it goes ding ding etc..
If you turn the car to the ON position, you get nothing from the power windows, wipers, radio, heater, etc.. but the headlights, break lights, blinkers, inside lights (the ones on the doors and overhead) all still seem to work. you also dont get the radio or anything in ACC.
If you try to start it, it still does nothing, no clicks, no radio, no heater, no wipers, etc..
all the fuses appear to be good, i played with the battery cables, tried jumping it etc but doesnt seem to make much difference.
cselby@mts.net - 28 Nov 2005 20:21 GMT Check with a test lite; The smaller wire coming off the battery + where it goes into the relay/fuse box next to the battery. Pull a fuse and see if power comes to one terminal. (you may only have the small fuse box on the + batt post). Test and inspect ALL the fuses and main relay. Test the ignition is getting power at the key switch assy. With key in ON position, check if power gets to the ACC 1, ACC 2, and IGN terminals.
Best guess from here, is there is blown fuse in the relay/fuse box next to the battery.

Everything thats wrong with the car seems to relate to that (ie radio, wipers, heater, starter, power window, all need ignition swith to work, lights, chime, interior lights, etc.. dont need ignition switch)
cselby@mts.net - 28 Nov 2005 22:09 GMT Only need to remove the shroud under the wheel (two halves) and the valence under the dash below the wheel to see the switch. I'd be inclined to test for power leading up to the switch before looking at the actual switch.

Just double checked the fuses, and replaced the 30A ignition fuse under the hood, still has power enough to run lights and stuff (even tried jumping it with other car) but still no power to anything that requires the ignition be in the ACC or ON posistion (radio, wipers, power windows, etc). Is there any wiring under the dash I should check for shorts or fuses/relays/etc/fusible links not in the kick panel fusebox or under the hood before i assume it's the ignition switch itself?
tom - 29 Nov 2005 21:45 GMT once again, clean the battery terminals and inside the battery wires. this is a common problem with the hundai .

I havent done anything yet, I had just gotten my voltmeter and was getting ready to test wires. It'll crank 3-4 times then just click a few times, I let it sit a minute or two and try again it'll just crank a few times. But it doesn't seem to want to fire over even after a long crank. It's usually hard to start after one day, So i'm guessing its just bring a pain after 3 days.
The clicking doesnt seem to be low charge since it will do it whether or no it's hooked up to another car via jumpers. It's a new starter and solenoid, is there a relay somewhere that could be bad?
tom - 30 Nov 2005 20:48 GMT and I bet you still have not cleaned the battery cables or terminals.

Don't forget the cables have 'two' ends.....

Then, just a few mintues ago, the same thing that started this all happened, was like a fuse got blown, and all the power in the dash, door windows, ignition, all goes out. Is there a circuit breaker somewhere that causes this? because the last time the only thing that fixed it was time, after letting it sit awhile all the power came back, and it would crank again.

I would try to run a booster cable from the battery negative to the firewall to see if that has any effect.
You might also have a circuit breaker in the power box. I don't have a manual for a car like yours to know for sure.
