Brand new 2006 Cavalier ... in for first oil change at the dealer. After
the oil change I head out on the highway. After about and hour, the car
started to slow down on it's own, even with foot on the gas, oil light is
on, engine light comes on ... as I pull off the highway the steering is hard
to move.
What happened, and what is the potential long term damage? I really don't
know anything about cars, so my guess would be, the dealer that just did the
oil change did not tighten the oil filter on enough and the engine lost all
it's oil? What I don't know is what the long term damage to the engine
would be if any? And how would I go about finding out the real damage here.
Of course the dealer that just did the oil change is going to try and cover
their butt .. so what should I do?
Thanks

Based on the story, you lost the engine. As in siezed up.
Document everything NOW. Write down who went where to get what, what
was allegedly done, by who (names), when it was done and when, the
circumstances after - time dates places, all contacted people in the
aftermath (names). AND word for word, what was said for the 'fix'.
Who took responsibility or not. Be insistant, do not back off.
CONTACT a lawyer , give him the story and ask questions. You may be
in for a battle.
Keep posting the follow ups. This is not the first time that this
type of thing has happened and it won't be the last.

Been there - got the 'fix'.

When the tow truck arrived and checked the oil ... it is still full. So now
I have no idea what happened?

Did it lose it's coolant?
You are still describing a seized engine.

=====================
I am a little confused....the car lost power...the oil light came on,
and this all happened just after an oil change done my the dealer..?
I saw nothing to indicate that the engine had seized in the 3-4 posts
I read... DID IT ?
BUT when the tow truck came the car did have oil in the pan...
This sounds like a failed oil pump...not a screw up with the oil
change...
In any case since the car is NEW it should be covered under warrenty.
IF not it could be covered under the the comprehensive part of your
Insurance policy..which normally would cover everything EXCEPT the
part that broke...(the oil pump)...the rest of the engine would be
covered...
HOWEVER ..since the OIL light came on... the OP is partly responsible
...the outcome of this could get interesting...

if they started the engine with no oill in it when they cahnged it then the
pump will have cavitated ie pumped air and that will mess up a pump and
cause a loss of oil pressure which can kill the motor. As far as ther
dealer goes take it to a different shop and have it inspected just make sure
that Gm recognizes the shop that you take it to for the inspection and if
the dealer is at fault then gm will make them repair any damage that theyt
caused.
good luck.

If the engine lost it's oil on the highway and seized up like you
describe, that engine is dead. Totally fried.
They owe you a new engine.
