I have a ford 150. It was running fine, but the last time I tried to
crank it it turned over for about 3 sec then nothing.
Turning the key again would do nothing. I even hooked the battery to
charger for a few hours but turning the key did nothing.
I took the battery out and had it checked where I bought it and it
tested fine.
When I put the battery back in the car I also tapped on the starter
with a hammer. This time I turned the key and it turned over again for
about 3 sec and then nothing again. Turning the key did nothing. I
did notice that turning the key would not dim the car light but it also
did nothing else. I tapped on the starter again but nothing happened.
Any suggestions on how I can narrow the problem?

The clue here is tapping the starter. Use a test lite at the starter
and see if you are getting power to it. You can do this at the starter
solenoid on the fender well - the starter side batt cable. If so,
remove the starter, repair/replace. If no power to the starter, see
if you have power to the solenoid from ignition, the small wire that
actuates the solenoid (key in start position). If so, replace the
solenoid. If not, jump it from the batt. side of the solenoid to the
small wire. If it cranks, go to the neutral safety switch and see if
you have power there. Try moving the shift lever back and forth a few
times. I'm assuming an auto trans - it is neutral or park right??
good luck
