Old car but no title?

I have an old 1989 American car that I inherited (actually it was just given
to me) from a relative.  The car was owned by the husband's company which
originally purchased the car and had the title.  The company has long ago
been dissolved and nobody has the title for it anymore.
It seems to be a catch 22 situation as the car is registered in my
relative's name (not the problem) and I'd like to sell the car, or even
donate it for that matter, but don't have a title.  I don't think I can
obtain a new title as the company is no longer in business and the company
owner is very ill and doesn't even remember about the car.
It still runs well, has only 65,000 miles.
I suppose I can have it junked, eventually.

Thoughts?
Thanks.

I would call the DMV and ask them. If you are a AAA member, they should be
able help you with the paperwork. Probably what you have to do depends on
where you live.

Here in Canada, you can go and request a new copy of the registration.
They will sell you one fairly cheap.

If there is no one to sign off on the 'sale', then you can go before a
JP or notary public and swear out a statement outlining the 'abandoned
vehicle's' Or I think they call it 'unsigned registration' story and get
a new registration in your name.

We recently did this for an abandoned van in our driveway.
