My old engine call for  Champion L87Y.
I can't find these.

All I can locate is Champion  327 - RL87YC.

I assume 327 is the new number.
Would  a resistor plug make a difference to the operation?
What about C is that copper core?

The R preceding the L87Y is for resistor type, the C succeeding the Y is for
copper core or copper plus I'm not sure which. I'm not sure about the 327
but that could just be the package number.

C is for copper core. 327 is the stock number.
