Lights dim when I stop and brighten when I hit the gas, what's the problem?

I have noticed that off and on one of my vehicles' lights will dim and fade
a little and come right back.  Whenever I hit the gas, they always
"brighten" up so to speak.

Is it time for a new battery or this indicative of something else?

First thing to check is the tension on the altenator belt.

Second thing to check is the alternator itself.  Many auto part stores
and garages offer this as a free service.

Thank you very much.  I will check with Auto Zone then to see if they can
assist.

I know the one near me stopped doing certain stuff a couple years back
because someone stole a diagnostics machine when one of the employees
took it outside to test something.  They also said someone stole their
tools before so they do not lend stuff out anymore either.

Hopefully they will help though because I do not have the money for a
mechanic at the moment.
