I need to split some ball joints but Peugeot have used nylock nuts
which are so stiff on the thead as to cause the thread and taper to
rotate so I can not release the nut.  I don't want to have to butcher
every ball joint to get them apart.  Any ideas?

Put a jack under the joint and raise the weight of the vehicle onto
the joint.   Try to loosen the nut then.

I have to wonder why the taper would be loose enuff to be loose just
by undoing the nut.

These are on each end of the strut connecting the anti-roll bar to the
McPherson strut, so they are horizontal and not possible to get any
weight on them. I wanted to remove the strut to be able to move the
hub axle out of the way more easily when trying to remove the drive
shaft.

Use some *large* pliers to compress the taper back it's bore, then
loosen the nut.
