I'll be on the interstate 2-3 times a month for a 500 mile round trip and
want to get a radar detector. They seem to range from $59-$500 or more.

I'm not interested in breaking the bank for "the very best" one or the kind
that gives you the cop's name and what he had for breakfast when he lights
you up.I just a little advance warning of cops in the area if the old needle
creeps up too high.

So where's the sweet spot in the market to get a decent one? Any specific
recommendations?

Since you obviously have nothing to contribute, you'd be better served
keeping your fingers off the keyboard...

I recently had the radar detector discussion with my son.

My points - 1) If you drive the speed limit, or at least close to the
speed limit, or at least stay close to the general speed of the
traffic, you don't need a radar detector. 2) If you get stopped and
you have a radar detector, the police are more likely to treat you
harshly. 3) The radar detector gives you a false sense of security.
Because the police use a number of different methods for speed
detection (instant on radar, laser, VASCAR, aerial timing, etc.) there
is no guarantee you will warned in time to prevent you from being
clocked at an excessive speed.

My Sons point - 1) It is just there to remind him not to speed, or if
he does accidentally speed, it is an extra layer of protection.

My son bought it with his own money. I let him keep it. I still think
they are a waste off money.

There internet is full of comparisons:

and too many more to list....

One thing that people don't research so much is the "radar profile" of
their vehicle. Some vehicles are harder to detect than others. As I
recall it, the early to mid-70's Corvettes were especially hard to
detect.
