New cars advertised with satellite radio

The tv commercials seem to be advertising that new cars come with
satellite radio.  I am not planning to buy a new car, but if I was, I
would not want satellite radio.  It eill be a cold day in hell before
I pay for radio. I rarely listen to any radios.  I have my cds and
mp3s.  I choose what I listen to, not some DJ.  It would really piss
me off if I had to pay for a sat. radio that I would never use.

OK, so don't pay for it. The cars with satellite radio installed also
have free radio, cd players and MP3 players - use those.

Right, I wont pay for the service, but you forget that I am paying for
the radio which they are forcing me to own when I buy the car.  Not
only is this cost added to the price of the car, but I will pay for
this unused piece of crap, in extra gas consumption, for the life of
the car.  Every ounce of weight added to a car, causes more gas
consumption.  Ok, I know someone is going to state that a radio is
lightweight, and will have little effect.  I agree.  An extra half
pound of weight is pretty minimal, but over the life of the car, every
ounce adds up.  If it costs me an extra 5 gallons of gas over the life
of the car, that's $20 wasted, plus how much is this thing adding to
the cost of the car at purchase time?  I'm sure it's at least $100,
probably more like $300.

My reason for bitching about this, is simple.  The car companies are
kissing a.s to these satellite radio companies.  They figure if the
thing is stuck in a persons face, many people will subscribe to it,
which they would not if they had to purchase and install the thing.
It's the same as department stores that put candy bars and all sorts
of little commonly used trinkets RIGHT BY the checkout counter, and
make sure the lines are long and slow, thus forcing people to look at
all this stuff.

As far as I know, for all but high end cars, the satellite radio
feature is optional. Don't order it. You don't sound like a high end
car kind of person, so I don't think this is something you should
spend much time worrying about. GM owns a chunk of XM, so they
definitely have a vested interest in pushing XM (at least till the
Sirius / XM Merger). Ford and Chrysler have invested in Sirius, so
they have a vested interest in pushing Sirius.

Do you also get upset over other items in cars that you don't like?
How about being forced to spend thousands for ABS and ESC that are
touted as safety devices despite no proof that they actually increase
safety. I'd rather not pay thousand for air bags that actually
decrease my safety since I wear my seat belt. How about Onstar? GM is
pushing that much harder than XM. How about the stupid 17" and 18"
wheels that actually reduce riding comfort, while doubling the cost of
replacement tires? It seems to me you are wasting your time worrying
about an optional feature you don't have to buy if you don't want to
when there are so many more expensive features being rammed down your
throat.

I have never bought a new car.  The newest car I own is 17 years old.
There are a lot of nonsense things put into cars and it seems to get
worse every year.  I fully agree with those large tires, as well as
airbags, and much more of what you mentioned, as well as other stuff.
I think having a DVD player is stupid.  I cant watch it while I drive.
Who needs GPS.  I have been driving 40 some years, I can get a map for
free at the DOT dept.

My old chevy has power windows.  I think they are useless.  Give me a
hand crank.  If the battery dies, I cant roll down the window.  I had
one of them quit working in the middle of winter, causing my front
seat to turn into a pile of snow.  They wanted over $300 to fix the
damn thing.  I removed the panel and permanently closed the window
with a chunk of 2x4 under it.

I'm glad I posted this though.  Now I know the car manufacturers have
their interests in these sat. radio companies.  The commercial I am
referring to mentions Sirius, and it's a Ford commercial.  Now I
understand.....  Thanks

I wont pay for radio, nor will I pay for cable tv.  Maybe it's just my
age, but the programming is still someone's idea of crap.....

Either it's free, or I spend my money on recordings or movies cds or
dvds.
