Dies on Hard Brake

My dad has a 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity  that is stalling on hard braking.

Get the car up to about 30 MPH, come down hard and constant to a "rocking"
stop and the engine stalls and dies.

Repeat the procedure but ease up on the brake when you get to about 10 MPH
and then reapply and the engine does not stall.

Repeat the procedure but place the car in nuetral prior to braking and the
engine does not stall.

One shade tree mechanic says the fuel pump is bad and he wants to replace
it. My guess is the tranny is the culprit - almost like it's not
downshifting fast enough.

Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

If this is a carbureted engine, it could be the float level.  I would also
check for vacuum leak in the brake booster (maybe the check valve) and have
the torque converter pressures checked.

John

Sorry for the lack of detail... it's a 2.5 (or 2.8 liter - I don't recall
which) fuel injected engine.

2.5 is a 4 banger and the 2.8 is a V6.  Try some throttle body cleaner
in the intake and clean out the throttle plate - and the Air Idle port
- and the PVC valve.

It's the torque converter lock-up solenoid. When it sticks on the car
acts like a manual trans car when you come to a stop without
depressing the clutch.  I've replaced dozens of these.
It's usually less than $250 from a good shop.
Are you a DIY'er?

HTH,
Ben

Yes I am a DIY'er.

Can you please explain what causes the soleniod to stick on and why the car
stalls ONLY if you come down hard on the brakes and stay on them hard until
the car makes a full "rocking" stop? Recall that it deosn't stall if you let
off the brake at about 10 MPH and then gradually reapply he brake and come
to a full stop.

Thanks much,
Randy

oops....
i should have read a bit better...
if it were me, i'd do what was suggested before and clean the throttle
plate.
maybe pinch off the vacuum hose to the brake booster and drive to see
if it improves if it can be done safely.
