driive.com http://xrl.us/ouk3t - ...If we were to pick any
of the current Mustang variants, the Parnelli Jones would
probably be it...(a total of 500 were produced)...but one
particular owner decided to make his PJ Mustang truly
unique. How? He added dual 57mm Precision turbos, upgraded
forged pistons, aluminum heads, a full three-inch exhaust
system, and much, much more. In total, the motor produces
768 horsepower and 769 lb-ft torque -- at the wheels! The
look of the car remains completely unchanged, making it as
much of a sleeper as a car painted in Grabber Orange can
be. The modded Parnelli is now up for sale on eBay Motors

Ahhhhh.. nothing like taking an overpriced in the first place limited
production special edition vehicle and modifying it so that it looses it's
"special edition" value then trying to sell it in the hopes of getting your
money back.

Well there *is* the possibility that the original parts come with it - in
*whatever* condition they happen to be in...

It doesn't really matter until they shave about 750lbs off the car
which would have been more effective than simply adding more HP
anyhow.

I will never, personally, understand why someone takes a car that
starts out at around $17-18k and spends over $50-70k, or even $100k
for the upscaled version of what is still a $17-18k.  Then you toss in
the fact that many of them are in rental fleets and the resale
plummets that much more.

I like the Mustang. It's a really nice looking car. Alas, even
supercharged, turbocharged, tweaked twiddled and twollopped it's still
not an over $35k car to me and that's if it had a full warranty to go
with it.

I'd agree with you.  I love my new Mustang.
It's a great little Pony car - fun to drive,
comfy, economical, killer looks, low purchase
price, and easy maintenance.   All the things
you'de want in a daily driver.  One of the best
cars I'v owned in a long time.

But as a performance car, it's sadly lacking.  Too
heavy, not enough power, not enough cubes, soft
suspension, small brakes.   There's no way I'd
$75K on a souped up limited edition Mustang, when
I can get a Z06 for the same money.

Yes but you will not have a back seat!    ;)

Both valid observations: Mustangs nice; Z06, no back seat.

From my experience with S197 Mustangs, it seems to me either the V6 or
the V8 is much more car than anyone really needs, overweight problem
notwithstanding. In either of them there is almost never occasion to
legally enjoy their capabilities. For those who find the opportunity,
cost of useful modifications is the least significant aspect of the
process. The Ford Factory Racers pare off a bit of avoirdupois and put
the money in the good stuff. Out of my financial league, but still a
neat package and a good value to those whose needs they fill.

I did extensive bolt-in suspension modifications on my V6 convertible,
added excellent wheels and tires, and came up with an on-ramp
masterpiece. Worked good on the autocross track, too. A real pleasure
to drive, but there it sits. Occasional autocross, occasional ramp
joy, occasional trip to the supermarket, occasional pleasure cruise.
Very few moments of full-use, and quite an investment just sitting
there. Seems as if the process of modifying it was as important and as
pleasurable as the ressult of all the money and the work. That may
have been true of the Parnelli Jones turbocharged project. Keep busy,
feelgood process and project.

Couple months ago I thought I was ready for a Shelby GT500, and
shopped a few. Test drives were delightful, I really enjoyed the cars.
Even at bargain basement prices, well under sticker, not for me. I
correctly anticipated the potential outcome of a GT500 purchase: same
deal as the modded V6. Nice car, lots of MPH capability, 'pedigree',
a pleasure to behold, all dressed up and no place to go. It would take
serious investment in time and money to use it at its limits more than
'occasionally'. I don't have the resources for that. I know of a few
who do, and I see the lengths they go to in trying to enjoy their cars
at that end of the envelope. Costly.

I settled for a GT/CS, recognizing its benefits and its limits, and
the limits it places on my impulse to modify it. Kind of a governor on
my behavior.

The differences between the V6 and the GT are not as important as the
similarities: either of them is a loaded gun on the highway, capable
of getting me - a decent and mature driver - into trouble with little
effort. Either the young folks with S197s have more sense than I give
them credit for, or someone is covering up a boatload of dangerous
behavior and accidents.

The Mustangs in rental  fleets as V6s, a whole different animal than the GT
V8s.   The resale value on the V8 is fantastic.   I drove home my '09 GT
convertible in March for $5,000, trading on '07 GT convertible.   The dealer
sold it within a week for just $3,000 less than I paid for in August of '06.
Drive a 500 or a KR and it will become apparent why they are worth the price
to ride   ;)

There are quite a few V8's in the rental fleets around here but yes
they do have better resale than the V6's.  I'd have a hard time
thinking you were that close in price with this economy unless the '09
incentives were huge (based on this economy that's not a stretch).

I haven't driven the KR or 500.  Pure power doesn't do it for me. I
want the overall package with an emphasis on handling and fun.  The
GT's I have driven (albeit only 3 of the new model, all basic
manuals), already felt nose heavy and wallowy in suspension.  The more
I read about the supercharged models they come across as even more
nose heavy.

Rip about 750lbs or so out of the car and you help every aspect of
performance instead of just one.

Oh, and none of my vehicles have a back seat unless you count the
motorcycles though my wife's car has one. I think we have carried
passengers twice in the last year. <grin>  You won't see me rushing
off to buy a Corvette either. I prefer to drive a car rather than lay
in an overstuffed no-feeling lounge chair, and yes, I have driven
several of the new Vette's (but not the Z06's).

Come to think of it, used Z06's are in the $20's...

Except for the Shelby Hertz GT cars. I know a guy who has 2. Bought them
directly from Hertz. a coupe and a convertible.
Mike Hunter - 23 Oct 2008 19:15 GMT
What is your point?  One can rent a MB, RR etc from rental car companies is
some markets, but they certainly not dumped on them and not the norm.

If history repeats, then again maybe we will buy Chinese knock-offs at
Walmart.
