Hello,

My wife and I are looking at a 08 Honda Fit with only 5k miles.  The
previous owner smoked in it however.  The dealership we are looking at
purchasing it from says, they can get that smell out no problem.
They are going to place an ionizer in there and they said it will do
the trick.  Is this really going to get rid of that smell
permanently?   Not sure if i completely trust the guy telling me this
information.

Thanks for the help

Tell 'em to have at it, and you'll buy it when it's done.

The cigarette smell is the result of oils and residues in the
upholstery, on the dashboard, in the air ducts and on all other
surfaces of the interior of the car.  No ionizer is going to get rid
of those oils and residues.  Only a thorough cleaning, detailing and
treatment of the affected fabrics can come close to doing an adequate
job.

Thanks for the replies.  I will tell them to have at it and we will
check it out when done.  Hopefully they wouldn't mask the smell with
something and a month later the smell would be back.

Might mention that you have family members that are hyper allergic to
perfumes etc and please don't use anything in the clean up that will be a
problem for them

Why not just take up smoking yourself.  Then you wont even notice it.

So, this is the scenario I imagine:  They say, okay, you buy the car, and we
will add a handwritten paragraph to the contract letting you off the hook if
the smell isn't gone.  Now, you're sitting in the car with the sales
manager.
HE:  I can't smell anything.
YOU:  I still smell it.
HE:  As far as I am concerned, the smell is gone.  You must be imaging it.
