From what I heard on the news, if GM goes down, there will no longer
be any parts for Gm vehicles, except after-market and used parts.
While most engine and drivetrain parts are after market type, many
body parts are only available from GM. This could be a real problem
for everyone with GM vehicles. The same will be true for Ford,
Chrysler or any other automaker that goes down.

I doubt that this is true. GM may go bankrupt, but it won't disappear.
And even if they pushed all the body dies into the ocean, the Chinese
will be willing to make parts.
Corporations as large as GM don't just evaporate. Even Studebaker
didn't disappear when they stopped making cars. The Studebaker
Corporation just morphed into something different. Selling parts is a
profitable business. Whatever happens to GM, some entity will want to
grab that business.

I can still buy parts for my Model A and my VW bug.

Those are popular/collectible. Are parts still available for DeSoto or
Kaiser?

Interestingly enough Buddy Hackett raised a similar point on TV at one time
when he asked Henry J Kaiser "Where can I get spark plugs for my Frasier ? "
Having both moved on to a new venue it is possible that they have now found
an answer though they had none at the time. Alternately, there may be no
Frasiers in the after life though that is a situation too horrible to be
contemplated.

You have to look but yes. We have a 47 DeSoto and a 49 Dodge and are still
able to get most parts.

Not to worry. The Parts System while part of GM, will be around a long time
yet.
