After many many years in automotive retail and maintenance, the
best advice I can offer is DO NOT buy ANY repair insurance plan,
it NOT a warranty. If you think you will come out ahead with a
repair insurance plan, (on average you will never collect the
cost of the plan let alone come out ahead,) you should ONLY buy
the extended service plan sold by the manufacture of the vehicle,
period. Put the money in a bank account and make any limited
repairs that would have been 'covered,' from it.

We just bought a 2001 Suburban with 79000 miles. We'll have it
through around 130,000 miles. Continental has a 4 yr 48,000 mile
warranty that will cover all of the drive train plus heating-A/C and
quite a few other things except the computer and suspension.
I'm worried about the transmission myself - that would cover the cost
of the entire warranty right there if it went out.
I did find out about the GM Protection Plan. Would you recommend
that?

Kent, I also spoke to Continental warranty a few months ago in regards to
one of my vehicles. It sounds like a good deal but am leery of them as the
dealer that I usually go to never heard of them. So I'm just going to let
the original warranty expire and keep my money. I guess if I feel that I
need the additional warranty I should get rid of the vehicle.

Well, we're just getting into this vehicle. It's a 2001 but has 79000
miles. It was a corporate lease, but who knows how they treated the
vehicle.
Having a 4x4 through 150,000 miles is more than likely going to cause
some pretty expensive trips to the shop. One transmission
replacement, or any of the other major componants (radiator, A/C
Compressor, etc.) will pay for a good part of this warranty.
We got a great deal on the vehicle, and just want to protect our
investment.

Well, I talked to the Chevy dealer, and the items that this warranty
covers aren't ones that the vehicle typically has issues with - it
seemed very limited on what it covers. We decided to put the money in
the bank and cover our own repairs.
