I drive a 626, 1993 LX. I am having problems when I try to put the car
into 1st gear. It just started today. Every other gear is smooth. It
isn't slipping out of gear but I have to push to move it to 1st.

Any ideas from anyone?

I was interested in any answers on this, too. My car (98 Saturn SL)
occassionally does this. I've found it helps to pull it into 2nd first, then
push it into first. It just helps it to line up better or something. I too
would like to know what ideas others might have, since I do not know a whole
lot about these things.

You are describing some worn synchronizers in that transmission.  There
is no easy fix for it and eventually you will need a transmission. I
suppose it's possible that you have a linkage problem.  Check that for
looseness, but it's a real long shot.
