Title Problems-"true mileage unknown"

I can't trade in my car (a 94 Honda Accord) because the Title does not
indicate the true mileage.

I've had the car since it was new. Leased it, re-leased it, then bought it
in 2002.

The title does not indicate the true milage because the leasing company I
bought the car from, incorrectly reported 65,000 miles (even) to the DMV in
1998. Don't know why it was even reported to the DMV. Could have been a
change in ownership of the leasing company, I don't recall. At any rate, the
leasing company seems to be out of business- Oxford Resources Corp which
became Oxford Leasing.

I only have roughly 58,000 miles on the car as of today(really!) I have all
my car's service records which show odometer readings through all the years.

The State of NJ DMV now says I need a notarized letter from the leasing
company saying that the 65,000 was incorrect.

I want to trade in the car for a new one, but can't get reasonable trade in
value because of this problem.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Anyone know if Oxford Resources/Oxford
Leasing still exists?

Thanks in Advance

Steve

Leasing reps often are too lazy to go out & check odometer readings, or
call where car is physically located & have it verified--takes too much
time.  I've had to do the same thing you need done.  If the co. is out of
business, I feel sure if you look hard enough you can find an "agent" of the
co. who will sign the needed notarized statement.  And who will ever try to
verify?
Another thing to remember is that a car that is over 10 years old can be
sold with the word "EXEMPT" written where the odometer reading is supposed
to go.
Is your car nice, tight, clean, run & drive like a true 58K-mile car?
If so, you might be better off retailing the car thru the newspaper & show
the buyer all the records you have & explain to him.  Let him have a mech.
check it  & let him judge the true mileage--a good mech. should be able to
tell if there is any significant difference in showing vs. reality.
BTW: Any rust on the car?  Auto w/ac?  Series, 2/4 door.  Extras?  Where
has it "lived" & now located?  Who knows, I may be a prospect......and how
much?     s
