How to safely sell a vehicle?

My son is thinking of selling his vehicle, but is not home often enough
to show it.  Since that may be my responsibility, I have some safety
concerns - for myself and the vehicle.  Do I allow a potential buyer to
take the car alone for a test drive?  How can I assure that the person
will return the car - and return it in good condition?  If I were to go
on the test drive, isn't that a safety risk for myself?  Would
appreciate any advice.  Thanks.

When they call about the car tell them you'll need to call them back
and get a phone number.  Unless it's a fairly new and still valuable
vehicle there's probably not a big risk someone is going to steal it
if they test drive it without you but you never know.  Almost every
used vehicle I've looked at the people let me take it for a test drive
without them.  When I'm selling my own I carry a concealed handgun and
go with them - that may not be an option for you.  You can take a cell
phone (without them knowing) and be prepared to dial 911.
