I want to tow a significant distance a boat and trailer weighing about
8,000 to 9,000 pounds with my 1973 Ford pick-up, which has about 60,000
actual miles. The plate on the door, which I can't decipher, reads:
F10YPM80143
Max. GVW 4,800
Model F102
Trans G
Axle 02
Cert. net HP 151
RPM 4000
DSO 58
Is this possible, or am I asking for trouble????
Thanks.

At a guess, you would be seriously overloaded. But you can find out a
bit more by entering the VIN at
<https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/vin_tools/default.asp>. Or
<http://www.fordf150.net/howto/decodevin2.php> suggests that your
truck has a 360 V8, with a 2-barrel carb, and was assembled at Twin
Cities. <http://www.fordification.com/data-1972.htm> indicates all
this, plus a production date of October, 1971, and a rear axle with a
4.00:1 ratio and 3300-lb. load capacity. It apparently was a special
order through a dealer in the Twin Cities region.
Finally, <http://www.medicine.wisc.edu/~mrm/bronco/ftvin.cgi>
gives
Model Year: 72
Series: F100 - 4x2 Pickup
Engine: 8 Cyl, 360ci, 2bbl
Assembly Plant: St. Paul
Transmission: The only information provided is Automatic. My guess is C6
Front Axle: No code selected
Rear Axle: 3.00 3300lb Ford

I wouldn't recommend it. It's certainly over the capacity of that
truck.
