i have a 2000 chevy venture and would like to get a remote car starter for
it. i've seen prices as low as $99 installed and as high as $350 (dealer
quote). the dealer claims all the cheap models bypass and trick the security
system in such a way that it leaves you vulnerable over the long haul. they
further claimed that they remove at least 100 a year of the cheap
aftermarket remote starters because of owner brings the vehicle in (because
it won't start at all) and it turns out the remote starter is the problem.
the dealer claimed the more expensive remote starters tie directly into the
car's system in such a way that it's fully integrated and not nearly as
vulerable to problems down the road.

Deal with someone who has a good name, and who will be there for you
if something goes wrong. There should be a warranty period on the unit.
Many people place an unjustified level of confidence in 'dealerships' - a
level which they do not always deserve. And, the dealerships are often
not the most economical way to get something done.

You get what you pay for, usually.....
That said, our old tenant bought an expensive remote with alarm from a
so called 'high end' shop and the bozos that installed it could never
make it work right. They even forgot to tighten down the battery
cables. Not once mind you, but twice at the cost of a new alternator
and computer and ignition module each time.... The sucker would die in
intersections and refuse to start sometimes and have to be towed. That
and just firing the alarm randomly drove him/us nuts.
Unfortunately he passed away before the lawsuit got settled.....
Some dealers have competent workers, lots don't.....
I would want a mess of references for doing that type of work and have
even heard of dealers that point blank will refuse to put the remote
start in recently.

Hi Ho Silver - 19 Nov 2005 02:33 GMT
$i have a 2000 chevy venture and would like to get a remote car starter for
$it.
Why? To spend money on a device which, when used the way most people
use them, wastes gas and is unnecessarily hard on the engine?

Don't you just love it when somebody sets their alarm as they walk up
to the neighborhood garage sale?
