My father in law has an old geo metro. Recently his serpentine belt
broke. He replaced it and the new one gets very, very hot. My guess is
on of the loads are dragging.  He said both the driven items
(alternator and probably a ps pump) turn freely.  Any suggestions?

Thanks
Robert

I'm thinking the belt tensioner pulley may be a little weak and
allowing the belt to slip enough when the alternator/PS is under load
to heat up the belt...this may have caused the old belt to fail.

Thanks Rick, I will look at that.

There has to be a Spec. for belt deflection measured at a curtain
point, like was done with the old V-belts. The PS pump is a pretty good
load, if you have the car standing still and move the wheel with the
engine idling you can here the RPM's go down!

I looked at it today and the belt is actualy a Vbelt a very small one
at that.  The loads are the alternator and water pump.  The spec is 1/4
inch maximum deflection and it was about 1 inch when I checked it.
Adjusted it to spec and he is going to try that for a few days.

The bearing in the Idler is probably wearing out. Since its sealed,
it can't be lubricated, just replace the whole thing before it quits
altogether and breaks another belt.
