Refrigerant oil is visible on the threads outside the center shaft.
Can just the seal/gasket be replaced?
Or does the whole compressor need replacing?

A little visible oil is OK.  Is it leaking enough that it needs freon
more then once every couple years?  If not I would not fix what's not
broke.

The seal can be replaced. The last time I did this many years ago I was told by several parts stores that I needed a new compressor, but I finally found a place that had a seal kit.
