Exhaust header problem 67' Chevelle

Hopefully there are some readers over here that can help me. I've
posted this several times in the Chevelle group and got no response at
all. I have right now FlowTech 11100FLTs, the right side is a perfect
fit. The right side is a no/go.

Trying to install headers on a 67 Malibu L79(327) TH400, PS, PB. Two
different brands I've tried both have severe interference with the
runner for cylinder 5 hitting the steering shaft. The headers which
were on this car when I bought it had the same problem but the
previous installer had taken the caveman approach and beat it to fit.
Not the method I want to use. Part number research shows MOST chevelle
and Camaro SB applications use the same parts, so a mixup would not
happen from that. Same with motor mounts(I wonder if the motor is
positioned correctly). Anyone got any ideas here??? I measured the
engine placement and it is dead center in the engine
compartment(fender to fender).

Anyone else run into this problem?....or better yet...solved it?

That's been a problem with pre built headers on Camaros since the
first sets were installed.  Of course that doesn't help with your
problem.

Find a company that sells the weld it yourself kits and you will be
able to slightly alter the path that that tube takes around the
steering box.  Then send the headers out and have them jet hot
coated/ceramic coated.

Thanks Ron, I was planning on cutting out the interference and welding
it back up. A lot less work then completely welding up a new set. For
now I'm just installing the right side as the old header is trashed
with perforations for the NY weather. I can't understand how they sell
it if they don't fit. I'm waiting for an answer from Support at
Flowtech too. Since Flowtech and the set on the car(Hooker I was told)
both have this problem, others must have experenced the same trouble.

Had a factory 67, 396 Camaro. Put two different sets of headers on it,
Headman and Doug Thorley. Neither set fit. The Headman's hit the upper "A"
frame, the Thorley's hit everything. I had to remove the steering box and
put it and the header back on together. Took half a day to put on the
driver's side. Ended making dimples with a ball pein hammer to get them to
fit.

Just for the record, I threaded some Hooker headers into my 327 El
Camino (1966) with little problem and no bending.  Even got it past
the three on the tree shifter.  I have PS & PB as well.

Something to check out...  The motor mounts on the frame could be wrong.
Sounds stupid but though a lot of research we found out that 307 motor
mounts sit 1/4" higher than 350 mounts on the 70's chevelle. Maybe the 283
mounts are different than the 327 mounts for 67. Also I'm not sure on that
year but some of the big block mounts were offset (69 Camaro) , making the
engine sit in there different if you put a small block on them you could
have clearance problems. I don't understand why they would do that, and
don't know how much difference it makes in the headers but something to
consider.
