For years now my 92 RS has had a temperature problem. The car does not over
heat however. The gauge in the car will always show the car running hot. I
replaced the water pump, thermostat, hoses, fan switch, and cooling water in
system. I just do not get it. Sitting at idle the gauage will go into the
red. ANy ides or any body else had this problem. Car has 305 TBI engine.

Have you replaced the temperature sensor for the gauge? Maybe it's not
really running as hot as indicated. - Gary

I had a 85 Chevrolet Caprice that after shutting down, would start to boil
over into the overflow. She always ran a little warm, but never to the
point of over-heating. Is this happening to you? Is coolant getting close
to the boiling point? If not, I would have to agree with Gary that you may
have a bad sensor.

I have same car and same engine and it was doing the same thing, I put a 165
degree Thermostat in it it still runs at 190 according to the temp gauge,
and I got the radiator flushed, not sure it that will help you or not but it
fixed my problem.

Chevrolet had a bulletin for camaros with temp guages being out of
calibration
as well as I can remember you get a 10 ohm 1/2 watt resistor and cut the
wire going to the coolant temp SENDER and splice the resistor in there this
is supposed to bring the guage reading down to match the actual temp of the
coolant
NOTE: Be sure you have the temp sender and not the sensor as 10 extra ohms
there would certainly cause performance problems

vins
check your vin before doing this procedure

I have an 85 IROC-Z, it always ran hot >220, the fan is rigged to run
non stop when the car is running and I still cannot use the AC long.
Recently it overheated and now I cannot run longer than 15 minutes
without overheating.
What I have done already:
* Checked the water pump, no movement, no noise and the water is
moving rapidly in the radiator.
* I replaced the 190 thermostat with a 165.
* I replaced all the hoses (they were getting worn anyway).
* I replaced the antifreeze when I back flushed the system.
* I replaced the 5 groove serpentine style belt.
* There is no oil in the coolant, I verified that during the back
flush with clear water, there is not water in the oil I changed it
and inspected it very closely indicating the head gasket in fair
condition.
Is there any chance that compression is being forced into the water
jacket and no fluids are being exchanged. This would cause air pockets
and the car would overheat fast. I have noticed that even with no
thermostat the up radiator hose is very rigid after a short time
running.
Thanks for your help.
