1987 camaro fuel pump?

i need to know if i can hook the fuel pump to a switch. i need to know
if it will work if i hook the positive wire straight to the power will
it turn on and work?  also to run it this way do i need to hook up
relay, or anything else besides a fuse? thanks alot for any help you may
be.    rich

Yes, it will work but you will bypass safety features inherent in the stock
system.

A relay would be a good idea, since the pump may pull enough power to overload
the switch.

In a stock setup, when you first turn the key on, a fuel pump relay runs the
pump for a couple of seconds to pressurize the system for start-up.  After
that, the fuel pump won't run until there's oil pressure.

That way, if you lose oil pressure (low oil or car is upside down via a
rollover) the fuel pump will shut off.  

With a switch, it's on all the time and in an accident it will run fuel out if
there is a broken fuel line.  Can be risky.
