Hi Folks!
I'm new to the list and have a neophyte question...
Just bought a very clean 97. The car runs fine but is a little hard to
start. Seller says this is normal for C5s; they'll always crank right up on
the second attempt (which has been true so far). Just wondering if any other
C5 owners have any advice...
Thanks!

I've never had trouble starting on the first crank. I live in California
where the temperature is moderate all year round.

Pure BS, mine has never made a full revolution before starting, most times
quicker. That includes starting it in sub zero weather. My advice is don't
get stiffed like that again, sounds like talk from a car salesman, that
don't know if he was punched, bored, or rusted through. Born in late July
1997, it has 40K plus and driven like it was stolen. I do take care of my
cars but I've never babied them either, it has seen 140 many times and
autocrosses in the summer.
Take a look at this site and see if it doesn't agree that it's not common.

Just ran an '03 rental to Vegas and back. Probably two
dozen starts in four days. Every one on the first rev of
the engine (probably fourth or fifth compression
stroke)--temps into the low 40s. Car not garaged.

Careful Mike. Only 4 compression strokes per revolution.

Regardless, unless there is a "problem", they come to life promptly. :-)

I have a 2001 and it starts on the first try every time! A couple of
days ago, the temperature was below 20 and it still started on the
first try!
I've never heard of a "hard starting" problem.

Just out of curiosity, did you buy this car from a dealer?

I've had my c5 since 98 and not once did that happen. The seller's full of

Not normal at all. C5's should kick right over. Mine's never taken more than a
bump on the starter.
I'd get it checked out. Could be as simple as a weak battery or a dirty fuel
filter.
Try a little experiment next time: Turn the key to "run" for a few seconds but
not all the to start, then hit the starter. That'll give the fuel pump time to
crank up some pressure.

The same guys that state that it is normal for it to be hard to start, also
tell you those noises and rattles, etc, are normal.
I have a 99 hardtop, and so far, it fires right up. The only problem I have
ever had, is when a squirrel chewed through some wires, and left an acorn
behind as his calling card

I have a 98 C5 and the only time it has ever turned over slow was when the
Battery was going bad.

Mark,
I am coming late to this thread but I think that I can cure your woes . . .
maybe. The maybe come in to play depending on whether you still have
warranty or not and whether or not you can afford the fix if you don't.
Anyway, here goes . . . I had the exact same problem with my 2000 R last
summer. I took it into the dealer and they had the car for a couple of days
when they nailed it down to a check valve in the fuel system. Now when I
heard that, I was happy . . . then the other shoe dropped. It turns out that
the check valve in question is in the tanks and require extensive
disassembly and reassembly. A week later and thankfully zero dollars later
thanks to warranty, it is starting like new again . . . much like others
describe in the thread.
Hopefully this will get you going down the path of blissfulness with you
Vette and hopefully it won't to painful for you . . . Warranty I hope!!
