Black tattle-tale box

Ken King - 12 Apr 2004 00:38 GMT Just picked up my Lemans Blue Limited edition, Still have my 95 (arctic white), can one have to many vettes?
The question is:
Can the tattle tale box be disconnected. I find it to be invasive to my rights. Having a box that can tell the cops, insurance companies and anyone else what I was doing is none of there business.
How long does it hold the information?
Thank
Ken
Bob I - 12 Apr 2004 01:32 GMT IIRC the last 5 second before Airbag deployment is what is saved. There are a couple of white papers and it was a hot topic several years ago(mostly misunderstanding what was stored). If you believe your rights are invaded then you probably ought to read up on it. Of course they still can figure out you were WAY over the limit when you launched it so what is it think you're going to hide from them?

[quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > > Ken Rufio - 17 Apr 2004 16:56 GMT I've wondered about disconnecting the black box - but.......if you are speeding & have the airbag deploy (presumably in an accident) - IT'S YOUR FAULT - you have to take responsibility for your speeding. If you are in an accident & can show you were 2mph under the limit - it's a very useful thing.
When (friends) pedestrians estimate the speed of my 99 6-speed (with after-market exhaust), they often OVERestimate by as much as 15-20mph. I'd like to have the black box prove them wrong.
And finally, having been out on a deserted desert road a few weeks ago, to do a top-speed check, I'm glad the figures aren't kept indefinitely.........or I'd be going to jail !

If you did you're a better man than I. Tried it on a 6 mile unobstructed stretch of road and I run out of balls before it run out of wind, although it was close. Didn't want to smoke the brakes so I didn't want any less distance to stop than I used to reach speed, it was done with ease in the 6 mile stretch. It was new then with 3,600 mile and it does stick to the road the faster you go. You know it's sucking down on the road and becomes easy to bottom out. That was what made me shut it down, just the right kind of hit on the frame and I don't want to know what could have happened.

I think there was anoth 5mph or so left. I know a 30 mile section of desert road with a number of 2+ mile straights, with 100-120mph kinks, bends, bridges or other speed control features. 2 lanes each way, raised median, farm land each side, no housing, no obsctructions to visibility. It doesn't get much better.
It's not too bad running the road fast - the only problem is having to assume (from experience) that other traffic will underestimate my speed by as much as 100mph. So if I see a single vehicle, it's time to slow down.
I'd already run my 99 Camaro SS down this road to about a speedo 160 and found my 99 Corvette 6-speed much easier to handle.
I'm not planning another speed run for now - although I might think of running the Silver State in a few years, when I've got a better handle on the car - http://www.silverstateclassic.com/

By the time I got done adding up the cost I scrapped the plan of going.

Tedd Riggs - 19 Apr 2004 15:08 GMT I was very lucky a little while back. We have a nice straight road that was just repaved and very little traffic as it cuts across some of those fields for Astro-Turf and other grass. Decided to see what my 98 C5 would do after installing a VaraRam intake and Bassani X-Pipe and Corsa Pro Tip Pace car exhaust.
Well got it up to what looked like 160 on the speedo (GPS said 158) and....a few mins later a unmarked police pulled me over :-(. Figured out I was off to jail.. He asked why the hurry and just told him the truth about wanting to see how the new intake and exhaust worked. He had clocked me at 156 mph and said he was "just checking out his new pulsed laser/radar gun and it gave a false reading with the extra "1" in front of the 56" So got a ticket for 56 mph ! He also had a vette and told me that his looked like mine at that speed (ie. Lowering itself a few inches) and same exhaust sound. Warned me that most other radar's are well checked out and do not have the speed reading problem, all while smiling and tell me I had a nice machine. Wow..talk about luck ! First ticket in 30 years for me as I usually drive no more then about 5 mph over the limit.

You are truly blessed. I got caught speeding in my '84. I was going just over 100. When the cop pulled me over he gave me a "break" and wrote it for 95 in a 55. I went to trial (mandatory if over 30(?) mph over the speed limit in Georgia) and got it reduced to 80 by not proceeding to trial. Still cost me a bundle. But you have to admit something special happens to a vette over 100 mph. I had my '84 up to about 125 mph and ran out of road. Supposedly the '84 would do 140 - 145 mph, but 125 was fast enough for me. BTW; the ticket didn't slow me down it just made me more careful about where I do it.

It felt good at 100, but touchy on handling, from 100-125 I almost chickened out as it just felt strange, almost like I was hydroplaning, but over 125, it seemed like it just "locked in" and felt like it was on rails, nice and smooth, but I did have rather white knuckles ! I don't know what our laws are on speeding, when I lived in Virginia years ago, 20 mph was "Reckless driving" a huge fine and I think a automatic 3 month suspension of your license. Mine was 56 in a 35 zone and if I pay it, it's $206. Have no idea what my insurance will do. The cop told me to take it to court and since I have a clean record (one speeding 30 years ago, the day after I got my license) and according to the cop, it will most likely not go on my record and they will drop the fine down to about $100. Guess I will find out in about a month. The cop said that if I had not been honest about speeding (told him I wanted to try out the new intake and exhaust) and no radar detector, he probably would have written the ticket for alot higher. The thing around here is make sure you are 100% legal around construction sites as the fines and charge double. A friend of mine got a ticket for 10 mph over, no shoulder belt and no current proof of insurance in the car, it cost him over $900 ! Good thing he was not talking on a cell phone at the same time. They get real nasty on that one. Ticket did not slow me down either as I usually stick to the limits pretty close, but I sure look around alot more now ! Tedd

If you guys want to keep doing this and making me jealous, may I suggest the "Valentine One" Radar/Laser detector? I've used a few different types over the years as a sales guy on the road and the V1 has them all beat, hands down. It has a lot of nice features. The only thing I don't like about it is the physical size. But if you look at one, you'll see why it's as big as it is. Just a little history, Mike Valentine was the chief engineer at Cincinnati Microwave that later became known as Escort, the makers of Escort and Passport Radar Detectors. Mike became dissatisfied with the way things were going at Escort (plummeting product quality and cost cutting) so he set off to develop and market the best detector known to mankind. My opinion is that he succeeded. BTW, mine is scary enough at 80, I'm not taking it over 100. Damn 36 year old technology...but it's staying that way.

Tedd Riggs - 19 Apr 2004 20:38 GMT I have a Valentine One and they are great units, hardly ever give a false alarm. Only trouble is mine is one of the first one's made and when I plug in the serial number, it tells me no upgrade to my unit, but will let me trade mine in and get a new one for $235. Have not decided if I will get it as I am usually pretty careful on speeds.

Dad - 19 Apr 2004 21:20 GMT You're entitled to your opinion. My Valentine is in the cupboard, never bothered to put in either one of my last three Corvettes. To old to up date and it's an ugly addition to any automobile. Never got but one ticket in a Corvette and that was in 1964. Most of the time, and I have been stopped lately, they just want to look at the car. The last two stops they never even mentioned the lack of a license plate on the front or Uzi on the passengers seat. Cops are there for clean up, paper work, and revenue enhancement, the courts have stripped them of being a competent police force.

Striker - 20 Apr 2004 18:39 GMT Interesting analogy, Dad. BTW: I got my "big' ticket from a cop getting on the interstate behind me. He was pretty pissed at me because he could catch up with me until I let off and slowed down below 120. I was stupid and a the best radar detector would have helped me. However, since he used the "pace " method of clocking me, his case was weaker in court. I got it down to 80 as I recall, but still paid thru the nose. That was almost 20 years ago and I remember it as if it was yesterday. Some sort of Corvette PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

But a radar detector really only serves the purpose of letting you know you got caught at the same time the cop knows he got you. Gives you the chance top get you license and registration together by the time he pulls out and lights you up :-)

Like I said...you have to use your head. If you are the lone wolf out there, you're screwed. Detectors ABSOLUTELY are NOT a guarantee that you won't get a ticket. At best, they significantly improve your odds. That's all I expect though. Most of the time I have plenty of warning when the cop is shooting cars way up ahead of me, even with instant on. Surprisingly, I even get laser warnings on occasion. They have more scatter than I would have expected. But like I said, if you're on the road alone, you're toast. Unless the cop is being lazy and leaving it on instead of using the instant on feature.

Was in a small town in Oregon and we stopped for lunch... as we were leaving town I went back up to about 65-70 in a 55 zone - no biggie until the detector went off BIG time like I was being microwaved from behind... only vehicle back there was a pickup, but I slowed back down to 55 - take no chances and sure enough it was a county mounty in an pickup - when he got closer I could see the light bar on top... and the V1 saved me from a ticket - even a small one is one I don't need...

Tedd Riggs - 20 Apr 2004 14:45 GMT The area is a two lane road that is about 4 miles across and has no homes or any entrances to the road at all. It cuts thru the middle of a 500 acre plot of land that grows grass sod on both sides of the road and also very little traffic, you enter it by coming down a large hill so you can look all the way down the road and see if there is any traffic. It's 35 as its in Redmond Town limits. Doing 156 mph on any road (except parts of the Autobahn) is not the worlds most responsible thing to do and the only time I have ever done something like that. But it was a clear day, Sunday morning at about 6:30 am and most of the town was asleep. Also I just took it up to that speed for about one second and then back down to 40 mph fast. I would not even think of speeding in a business area or a road that had many entrances, this one just cuts thru a big patch of farmland and also was just repaved, so nice and smooth. So yes, I was a little irresponsible for a min or so.

If he is moving to intercept you, you simply have to get to the intersection point before him, and be gone. When he gets there, he is waiting for you to show up.
It has been done, in day and night conditions, and I won't mention names.

In Texas where I live now, You can make the ticket go away if you agree to go to driving school. You will still pay the fine and some fees, but no points or insurance problems if you finish the school and stay clean for 6 months I believe.
