( Sorry for the long winded post, but I'm pissed and need to explain :-)

Hey guys, anyone have a GM hour/rate book for c4 (1994 LT1, ragtop, 6 speed)

I feel like I got reamed by local corvette shop (Leo's Automotive,
Pensacola Florida)

I just picked up my Vette from having Ripper Shifter & Plugs installed.

Leo told me the last time I took in my Vette for u-joints that he would
install a Ripper for 1 hr labor. I immediately questioned him, "You can get
to the inner boot and shift rod pin from the cockpit, without dropping the
x-member and exhaust?!?" He said in his smarmy way, Ric I need to teach you a
few things, bud.... I sure can!

Well I went to pay my bill and he charged me 4 HR!!! I got home and
called him to complain, "Leo what happened to the hour?!?" He tried to give
me a bullshitish fast talking story that, "Well Ric that shifter you brought
(B&M Ripper)in didn't come with the complete rocker box assembly that attaches
to the rear of the tranny." "If it did, I wouldn't of had to drop the exhaust and
x-member, Cause I could of just pulled the shift rod out with the complete
rocker box shifter assembly."  ??!!??

Hell I even showed him the assembled shifter when I brought it in. I wanted to make
sure he didn't have to mess with the pre-load I put on the pivot point shaft and
nuts. I wet sanded down the nylon washers some to make the shifter pivot forward and
back easily. The new nylon washers were too tight when installed and it would hardly
pivot.

I've never seen a shifter sold, (Hurst or B&M) with the complete outer rocker
box assembly. I'd bet my little finger that rocker box assembly that attaches
to the rear of the tranny is a ZF serviced item ONLY. If by chance ZF even sells
them separately at all.

I went over and over my service manual after getting off the phone with him
a few minutes ago. And it damn sure looks to me that to get any part of the shift
assembly out you have to remove the pin at the shifter base. The shift rod going
into the tranny is two piece with a pin, but it looks to me like you have to get the
shifter out of the way first anyway...... What's got me pissed about this part of the
visit is he didn't even call me to let me know......

And I HATE the way it shifts!! You darn near have to use both hands to pull it back!!
I've had many SuperShifters & SuperShifter II's in my day and the short throw is
slightly stiffer to shift due to the lost leverage, but this thing is TERRIBLE!!
And a loud clunk with every shift. I realize an internal rail tranny might be
different than say a Muncie, but dang this is unbearable. I'm afraid that might
be the Ripper design -vs- anything Leo actually did wrong... dunno.

NEXT, he charged me $253.00 to put a set of plugs in (AC Platinum)!!!!
$150.00 labor and $13.00 per freaking plug!!

Couple questions for my backup come Monday bitch session with Leo :-)

1) Can someone look up what GM pays to R&R plugs on a LT1 C4?

2) Can someone possibly look up what it pays to R&R a shifter for the ZF tranny?
(although 4 hr might be on par, but the Bastage didn't call me)

3) Anyone with experience, is it possible to remove the complete rocker box/shifter
assembly at the rear of the tranny without having to remove the pin from the base of
the shifter.(inside the rocker box) i.e. remove the rocker box/shifter assembly
without dropping the x-member & exhaust like he's trying to say.

I'd really, really appreciate it.

Thanks, Guys

I showed your email to the local vette performance shop ( not connected with
GM other then authorized reseller for parts.

He said the Spark plug price was way out of line as the local Shucks Auto
sells the AC Platinum for $1.99 each, he usually marks them up to $4  plug.
The only plug he sells that is close in price is the "Accel 8178, Premium
Platinum" which sell locally for $13 and he sells them for $15 (but says
they are not worth it) and a max labor of $75 to install assuming he finds
one cross threaded, otherwise $60.
On the shifter, he said assuming you have some rust build up and maybe a
few frozen bolts, then 2 hours to do it is plenty for a 94. He said the only
time he charged 4 hours was for the shifter change and B&B Header and B&B
PRT exhaust system.
So.... almost 4x cheaper on the plugs and about half for the shifter. $75/hr
labor charge.

I'll check with a friend that is in service at the dealer and see what
he says, probably will be higher.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks so much for the info! I had a busy weekend so just reading thread.

I called around the region to different Corvette shops and they
were all in line with an hour for the plugs and 2 hours for the shifter.

Leo just got caught with his hand in the cookie jar! Plus cherry picking
me on
charging an hour for draining the tranny and adding my own Syncromax fluid.
And an hour for bleeding the clutch. While it was already up on the hoist
for the shifter & oil change.....

He called this morning when I got to my shop. Falling all over himself
apologizing and wanting to know what I wanted him to do. He offered all
the disputed money back. Well he's been wanting to put a new ragtop on
my '94.
I told him to work up a price for the top and deduct the $348.00 that I feel
I was overcharged. Plus I warned him, I know a new stayfast/glass window
top install doesn't go for $1500... so don't call back with "Hey Ric
I'll do it for
$1100! LOL

I can get the new Stayfast/Glass window top from MidAmerica for $550.00
then plus labor to install. (I wish I knew what it pays to install a top)
I'll see what price he comes back with.

ON THE RIPPER -
I'm getting kinda attached to the clacky clacky little stub.....  :-)

I'm going to try to find a machine shop to turn me down a small extension.
Piece of stainless or regular steel rod just a little bit bigger than
the 9/16 diameter
of the original shifter shaft. Tap threads up into the extension about
3/4 length of the thread reach
on the handle. Then turn down the tip of the rod to be able to get a die
on and tap the 9/16-18
threads. Screw the knob on and use the thread on the handle end to
adjust height of the complete
handle. Jam nut the extension on the handle and use the regular jam nut
under the knob.

/  \
|   |   handle end

I'll bet with another inch or so handle length it will bring back enough
leverage
to make it just about perfect.

Once again thanks so much or the responses guys!!!

I'm going to just go back to changing my own damn plugs on this C4,
Bad back or not....  LOL

Leo called back with a price to do the Top replacement.
$950.00 regular price.

He said he would put mine on for a total of $575.00 + tax.
Stayfast & glass window.

I see that MidAmerica sells the top/glass for $550.00.
So it seems like he's making good on the overcharge,
$575.00 + tax installed.

Any extra weatherstrips will be extra. I'm probably gonna
get the B pillar strips replaced (after I get a quote from him first for
damn sure LOL)
and I'm going to do the top of the doors myself with the Mid America kit
that comes with the rivets.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I had mine on my 93 replaced.  I decided not to go with the glass, but to stay original.  They charged me parts and labor $700.00.  If I wanted the glass, there was an addition support kit that ran around $150.00.  The shop said he could get either top for the same price, the rest is just labor.
