Hi everyone

Finally the problem is solved. Results, Faulty injector, #3. For future
causes, is there a specific way to tell if an injector is working or not?

Thanks for all your help...

yes there is a way to tell, but it is pretty labor intensive! you have
to pull all of the injectors and fuel rails, pressurize the system,
then use a fuel injection tester (snap-on has them) to turn them on at
various rate and look at the flow pattern and amounts sprayed.
it really is a job for a professional. greg

Makes sense.

I wound up with 5 (that's right, 5) crappy injectors in various stages
of pooping out.  Car ran pretty good, but wouldn't smog...alternately
lean and rich.

My mechanic finally yanked the rails and injectors, pressurized the
whole rig, and looked at the spray patterns.

Wound up buying all new injectors.  Sucker runs like a scalded dog.
Go figure.

So how did YOU figure it out?

So much for doing your own diagnostic. How much did you get smoked by
the mechanic ?

By the way, here's an old post (couple of years ago) from this news
group about injectors (no opinion express or implied by me):

=============================================

Replacing injectors on an '85 (possibly other years) I know you're not
gonna like this, but you can replace your whole set of eight injectors

(24lb/hr injs. on an 85) for the price of one from GM. FORD motorsport
24# injectors for $169 a set! Pick up a copy, better yet, write down
the phone number out of a page of a mustang magazine at your local
store. ( You don't actually want to *BUY* a mustang mag... ;-) Look
for 24# Ford MotorSport injectors. Price will range from $169 ~ $209
for a set!

I have an '85 and replaced mine after 35,000 miles and *wow* what a
difference. The car had a much smoother idle! Turned my "lumpy" cam
into a tame one.

As for the car, it runs nice now. It still has the natural roughness, but my
body doesn't shake from side to side anymore. I got clipped about 200 for
the whole job, but would a Ford injector actually work in a Corvette? Sounds
pretty interesting....If thats the case, I'll pick up a whole set and just
have them all replaced next time I run into the same problem.

Thanks
