Grundy Insurance deal

I picked this up on the NCRS board tonight.  Something to think about.

Since insurance comes up rather often, I thought I'd pass this note on that
I received from Grundy:

Thank You for contacting GRUNDY WORLDWIDE's web site. Unfortunately, we
are
unable to insure Corvettes model year 1974 or newer unless the vehicle
is
part of a collection of collector cars. Best of luck in your search for
   proper coverage on your vehicle.
   Respectfully,
   GRUNDY WORLDWIDE

No where on their web site do they state this.
The best part, on their application, I listed this:

How many collector cars owned? - 2

I wonder what they require as a collection.

I never have a problem with Hagerty.  I was REAL impressed with their 24
hour roadside service as well.  I had to use that part of my coverage
when I thought I lost a rear wheel bearing.  The guy showed up with a
flatbed and was super careful with my car.  I pay $235 a year ($15 of it
is for the roadside service) and my car is covered for $30K.

I liked the part that Grundy was realistic about driving.  They say they
don't have limits, because they drive their cars, too.  After all, if you
have a 2500 mile limit, and drove to Bloomington from New York, or on one of
the NCRS road trips, you could use up all your miles in one trip.  And if
you were driving to something like Nashville last year from California, you
couldn't drive home! (yeah, like that would happen.)

But if they won't insure you newer than a '74, and the
collector/classic/antique begins at 25 years, then those with 1979 and below
are out of luck.

And if you have to have a huge collection, that does most of us in, also.  I
mean, if you can have two or 3 cars, and that isn't enough for Grundy, then
I guess most of us need to look other places.

Hope you are reading this Grundy!

One problem you may have is you must have a newer car insured by some other
company in order to get collector insurance.

So if you have your 03 Honda Accord insured by State Farm,  then you might be
able to get collector insurance for the 75 Corvette.

Not so with Hagerty.

I have Hagerty and you must have a newer insured car in order for them to
insure your older classic.

Interesting, I also have them and the subject never came up.  Maybe it's
something that the broker threw in to get more of your business?

My insurance broker had nothing to do with it.  On the application you must
list your newer car and the insurance for that car.

I think it also explans in on the application that this must be filled in
before you can submit the application as Hagerty does not insure daily drivers
and you can not use Hagerty as your main car insurance.  In other words, you
must be insured by another insurance company before Hagerty will insure your
classic.

I don't think this is the deal on the original note.  He has been rebuilding
a rear suspension so I don't think he is driving it.  That means he must
have some way around.

The catch is that he lists two collector cars yet Grundy says they won't
insure one as new as a '79 unless it is part of a collection.  I guess two
isn't a collection.

I haven't seen any of the collector insurance companies not mention you must
have a daily driver and regular insurance on the daily.  They all mention
the collector is not to be used for daily and not to be used as backup
transportation.

The world of insurance just plain sucks.

Hey it is after Midnight and honestly I am kind of tired....

BUT....

If I am not mistaken my Insurance Company (American Collectors)
requires that you have.. and use.. another  car for daily
transportation....  That is has to be insured is not mentioned BUT at
least in Maryland every vehicle MUST be insured...

I Insure 6 vehicles with Amercan Collectors (5 Vettes and a Chevelle)
none of which are driven daily...

They do require a car to be at least 25 years old before then will
insure it...BUT they did insure my 95 which is a little younger then
25 years old  ...

As Far as that 2,500 miles per year I know they will wave that FOR
Specific Trips...

If I remember correctly It did cost me 25 bucks extra to insure my 72
for the National Caravan in 1999 and last year
I drove the 95 to Nashvile ..again with an OK from them because it was
a "national" event..   who knows ... all I did was pick up the phone
in each case (months in advance however) They did NOT hit me with a
25 dollar "special surcharge" for insuring the car for more then the
2,500 mile limit on the 95...

BTW I purchased the 95 within days after doing the National Caravan in
1999 driving the 72.

The wife insisted that she would NEVER do
another trip like that in my very tightly sprung (stiff enough to tell
if that dime was heads up or tails up as you drove over it) and rather
hot (inside) car  she wanted a car that was comfortable and had an A/C

She also purchased a HOT tub within days after we got home...since she
discovered that hot tubs worked wonders on her sore, aching back after
ridding in the 72 all day...

I wonder if 6 Cars qualify with Grundy as a TRUE Collection...Ido not
think I have a collection...A Fleet maybe but not a collection

No doubt; especially with the unconstitutional mandatory laws. I would
point you to my website Screwed By insurance, but it's temporarily down
due to lack of hosting funds.
I had 4 cars insured through Grundy. A '72 bug, '78 BMW, '83 Nissan ZX, &
'89 VW Cabriolet. For liability & comprehensive, with stated values of
$25,000, $4,000, $7,500, & $4,000 (repectively), it cost me $245 a year.
Unlimited mileage, must be garage kept, must have other car for daily use
(but they didn't ask for that insurance). I don't understand why you had
problems with your 'Vette.

+1 here - same experience with Hagerty when I bought mine 2 years ago.
