Diode,
We recently had a nasty wreak where a 68 L-79 (I think that's the right
engine, air cleaner says "11.0:1 350 HP/360 lb-ft) but not sure as this one
looks like the stock carb. as a Holley four-barrel and if I remember you
said yours was a Rochester Type 4MV four-barrel Model 7028207. Odometer says
79,483 and it looks like its had a pampered life. Also not 100% sure if its
a Coupe or Convertible (well at the moment its a "convertible" for sure),
its got "Fisher Body Style Number 68-19437" on the door sill and cannot find
a look-up chart on that one. Also sounds like a healthy cam and found part
of the window sticker that has:

RPO G81 Positraction rear axle 3.70:1
RPO J56 Special heavy-duty brakes
RPO M22 Heavy-duty close-ratio (rest cut off)
RPO U79 Stereo radio
RPO C60 Air conditioning
It has more options, but cannot make them out.

Anyway......The long and short of it. The guy was passing a large bus at a
pretty high speed and somehow missed seeing a Firetruck moving alot slower
in the other lane and both he and the Firetruck hit the brakes, but he was
moving fast and slide up under the Firetruck which cut the top of his vette
off fairly cleanly about 2 inches above the base of the windshield. He was
very lucky as at the last second he lay down across the console and only
ended up with some glass/metal cuts. Looks like his rear end lodged between
the double rear tires of the trunk which stopped him. She is not pretty as
top shaved off, Steering wheel bent down and body damage to the rear quarter
panels and some to the front. But..it still runs fine (Cracked radiator) and
since it involved a city vehicle, is in the city yard. As of right now, they
are parting it out, in 30 days it goes for public auction for what I am told
would be $4,000.  The City yard people have no idea what the vette is worth
as they usually only handle city vehicles and seem pretty open to offers.
Only thing not for sale separate is the engine, so if someone wants that,
they have to buy the whole thing.
She starts up fine (Needs a jump start as I think the battery has some
cracked plates and only reads 4.8 Volts) has a nice rumble, but could not
take a test spin due to city insurance and one of the workers got all 4
wheels and tires for $50 ! So from 7/7/2004 to 8/9/2004, it's open to look
at or buy for anyone connected to the City or State. I'm lucky as on the
Seattle PD/Fire Emergency medical team.

So..........Longer email then I planned but thought maybe you would be
interested. The local collision shop has looked over it and figured around
$6K to put it back in decent shape, another $2K for a complete paint job.The
68's have always been a favorite for me.

So....if you are interested in any parts, let me know and I can check
them out.  I am not that up to speed on the going prices for the 350 1968's
as most of them around here are 427's which go from $11-22K.

Ok to email me direct is you want, take the "NS" out of my email address
and it will work.

Also...did I read a rumor you might sell your 79 Triumph Bonneville ?  That
would be sad !

Ted:

Thanks for keeping me in mind.  I really appreciate that.  There are a
couple of parts that I'm quite interested in.  I'll email you from home
tonight.  Yes, the Bonny must go.  As soon as it's reassembled it's
going on the market.  And yes, it is sad...I really love the bike.  I
can't ride it any more because of my leg.  If I put the forward controls
on it (already bought the kit) I could ride it fine.  The problem is, I
would have to ride it directly to the lawyer's office and sign the
divorce papers.  I guess I can't blame my wife...she went through an
awful lot over the past 4+ years because of my accident.  She's just
hell bent on not repeating those events.

DOH......
I already mentioned the windshield was shaved off, so that would include
the windshield pillar's.
And as I said, no frame damage, the windshield area plus bent steering
column took most of the force, what was left was absorbed by rear tires of
the vette against rear tires of the firetruck.

Stick to what you know, whatever that is.

it seems to me I might have hinted at this in the first post.
"cut the top of his vette off fairly cleanly about 2 inches above the base
of the windshield"
&
"She is not pretty as top shaved off, Steering wheel bent down and body
damage to the rear quarter
panels and some to the front."

Kinda sounds like I covered those issues.  Maybe Dave was the unknown
passenger that got his head shaved off ? <g>

ME:  Dont make an absolute statement like 'the frame was not damaged'
unless you personally have covered every inch of it thru close
inspection. Based on that sort of an accident, the car is now going to
have lots of rattles and creaks as a bare minimum .

Eh... but YOU can make an "absolute statement" like "There will be frame
damage" without ever having seen the vehicle?

Have you ever rebuilt a wrecked/totaled car?  I have, 4 Chevrolets, a
Corvette, two Pontiacs and 3 Chevrolet pickups. Most of which were
considered totals. All but two were driven for years by members of my
family. Rattles and creaks were not the problem and none had those after
they were again drivable. You really can't find rattles before they are
drivable though, can you oh great automotive god?

Like I've said before, you don't know if your a.s was punched, bored, or
rusted through. Now I have to agree with Diode, Shut up dave!

Shut up dave!

Dumb sh.t Dave,
But its OK that you have no knowledge of the wreak and you can state ""There
will be frame
damage"  ??

Sorry the NoFrame damage came from one collision shop and the dealer, both
have laser test jigs for frame damage. Plus the alignment was still well
within spec.

So  your  expert eye is better then a laser with .001 inch tolerance ?   I
don't think so.

We are talking about a parts car aren't we. Unless it's a frame you are
looking for, who cares.   I'm sure that there is a lot to salvage from the
wreck.  Maybe Diode will finally be able to get the A.I.R. valve he needs
(no frame needed).

Bingo bad65,
Yes its mainly a parts car, would take alot to get it back to on the road
unless someone had a 68 spare body around.

You mean...you can tell these people that a car you have never seen, wasnt
present at the time of the accident, AND you have no formal training at all
in body and frame repair that there WILL be damage, but you cant tell us how
the great flood killed off some fish?
You are really a f.cked up person Dave..

Stolen blatently from Alt.autos.corvettes

Shut up Dave
