I'm trying to figure out where to look on the block of a 72 vette to
find the numbers that are supposed to match the last 6 digits of the
VIN. I've found a couple of different numbers stamped on the block,
but, so far none that were in the same format as the last 4 digits of
the VIN number.
I believe this dealer's trying to sell me a load of crap about
"original miles," but I can't prove it. I definately want to know
before I buy the vehicle.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

It is on the right front corner of the block on a pad the protrudes from the
milled block surface that the heads mount on. I'm not aware of any other
"stamped" numbers you can find on the block, cast, yes, stamped, no. Number
should not be larger than 7004.

How are you going to determine the likelyhood of "original" miles from
matching the info on the engine pad with the vin?

Dave, when you posted this a week and a half ago you got some good info:

Should be on a pad on the right front corner of the block. Just
remember if you are concerned about numbers matching that there are
other numbers to match. There are also ways to have a replacement
motor that has been restamped.

Well here are my thoughts in this area. Any deal that you are hinckey
about, you should walk away from if your gut is telling you something
is wrong.
Why do you suspect the dealer is "trying to sell me a load of crap"
over the milage? A lot of older Vettes can have an extremely low
number of miles on them. Many older Vettes were not used as daily
drivers, especially as they aged. Most decent survivors I have seen
have been quite low milage.
Is there any other areas that causes you concern?

Look on the front ot the passengers side of the block just below the
valve cover you should see a small pad and if you look real close you
will see a number stamped on there....should start with a "C" and 2
more letters then a number... the last numbers should match the vin of
the car IF it is the original engine...
Low milage is something I absolutely will not pay a premium for... or
at least not any large premium... What I will pay a premium for is
Cosmetics... Personally I can turn a wrench but body work, painting
etc are not my things...

MES spoke thusly...
> My 74 has 68000 original miles.
<snip>
I don't get it...why do people come by here, ask a question, then
evaporate? Do you think that they get the answer and then split without
so much as a "thanks"? Or do they ask and never return for the answer?
It's weird...I've seen this happen over and over. Very troll like
behavior, isn't it?
