Kinda OT.  Radar detectors, Escort Solo vs older Valentine One.

Sorry this is a bit OT...but at least it would go in my Vette....

I have one of the first Valentine One Radar Detectors from the early days
before the company split up.  So this one is from around 1995 and in those
days by far the best. However looking at the upgrade page, I get:
"V1 Description: Covers X, K, and all of Ka (33.4-36.0 GHz, sometimes called
"superwide"). Laser warning is front-only.
Upgrade Recommendation: We're uncomfortable now with the Ka performance of
these early "superwide" units. We've made major steps up in Ka since then.
If you value performance, we advise upgrading."

So...a couple of options. My old V1 has never been in the Vette, but worked
great hardwired to power and living on the passenger side visor of my Mitsu.
3000 GT VR4 and saved my butt many times, but alot of falsing around stores
(Security Systems). Only problem is when I sold the car, did not remove the
DC power wires.

So..3 choices.
Keep the antique V1 and buy a power cord.
Upgrade to the new one, they keep the old and send you a new ones with all
accessories for $270 instead of the regular $399 price.
Go with the cordless Escort SOLO S2 (even thou Valentine says cordless are
no good, the S2 has some decent ratings) $329.

From what I read, the S2 is way above any cordless, but still does not give
the range of a V1. Also always liked the V1 arrows that tell you the
direction the radar is coming from (Front, Sides or Back) and lets you know
where to look.

Probably 90% of the time I Stay close to the speed limits, those other 10% of
the times it would sure be nice to have a detector again...

Any ideas out there ?
Thanks
Tedd

sell it on ebay and buy a new V1.  You'll probably get 1/2 the price of
a new one.  (I _tried_ to find one for cheap on ebay and ended up buying
a new one...)

Tedd:

Are you saying that the new V1 is front laser only?  Not that it matters
much...I've never seen a trooper aim a laser at a target that's moving
away from him.  There's two problems I see with the Solo...first, as
battery voltage drops, so does range and accuracy.  So unless you want
to keep putting fresh batteries in every time you drive the car...
Second, Mike Valentine left Escort primarily because he was unhappy with
the way things were going there, including using the cheesiest
components they could buy, going strictly on price.  The only complaint
I have about my V1 is the physical size.  But then again, it does have
the arrow display.
BTW, what's happening with that 68 that's in the "yard"?

That's what I heard also.. I had Valentine Ones in the past. They were
hands down
the best at the time.. But I don't use detectors anymore.

Diode,
No..the new V1's are front and rear laser. My 10 yr old one is front only.
Did you get my email last week on the 68 vette ?
