battlescar2112 - 04 Feb 2005 22:01 GMT I just wanted to let everyone here know, that the car that created so much discussion about asking too much or trying to get money for a "pile of rusted bolts" or something like that, has sold. it was posted on Ebay with an opening bid of $4500.00 and a Buy It Now for $5850.00.....the Buy It Now was used....... this group is a very cynical and negative group.......except for a handful of stand up guys, Zomby-Woof comes to mind. Oh well, whatever makes you happy I guess.....thanks for the good reading. Matt
Tom in Missouri - 05 Feb 2005 03:26 GMT Cynical is what you get with you buy a car for $5000 "nearly ready to go" and discover after you put $4000, you can only get $4000 out of it.
The problem is that years ago, that was accepted. You built your car because that was what you loved. Then came the money years, where everyone makes money. Now if you can't make a profit, it really hurts. But reality, until it looks like a million bucks, it isn't worth much to most people.
Glad yours worked out. eBay can be so fickled.

That pretty well sums it up. Have a similar situation in hand. Bought a 78 for $5,000 taxes in. To date have spent just over $18G on parts. $6000+ in the interior alone (new right down to the last chrome washer). Untold hours of work. 23+ large in it. Still going, replacing the door and window posts and who knows what else before I'm done. What's it worth? Probably about 12 when I'm finished, but who cares.... it's not for sale. Love that PITA car. Unlike the 59 which I 'anticipate' will need about 10 to 12 grand to make it pretty. IF it ever gets sold it'll probably get all the funds back. Again... who cares? It's not for sale either. No love,...yet, just a long time dream. Richard

[quoted text clipped - 16 lines] >a long time dream. >Richard Along similar lines I have a `72 bb drop-top out in the supposed two-car garage. Now it shares space with my two bikes, but that is about all that is out there. It has been years since the car was on the road and will probably be years more before it is again. The body is off and suspended, the frame is one a set of used rims with some old beater tires and the engine is on an engine stand. The rest of it is in a box here and a box there. There are also various coffee cans of nuts, bolts, and screws. Everything is labeled so I know what is what and where it should go back. It is a on-going stop & go project. With two kids in University it doesn't get an awful lot of money spent on it, but I clean a part here, find a part there and one day will be all wrenched back together. I still haven't 100% decided if it will be put back together 100% original or my version of ideal. For example it didn't come with side-pipes, but I have a set for it. The color is still up in the air as either a correct paint for the year, or a color I happen to like. If I had the money today to send it out for paint there is a real good chance it would end up `06 Desert Orange Metallic. The local dealer has one on the showroom floor in that color and I fell in lust. The one thing I can tell you is that car will never ever be sold and isn't being done to be sold or make money on. If I ever become the ancient doddering old fool physically and can't shift it anymore, I'll swap out the 4-speed for an auto. Hell I might have myself buried in it.
Along similar lines my neighbor has a `57 Chevy is his garage that is 100% original & stock. He hasn't touched it in the ten years I have lived here. He says it is his retirement project. We are both heard to say "one day, one day soon" very often. Kids can interrupt projects like these quite often. With what I have paid in tuition I could have paid someone to do one sweet restro a long time ago.

Very painful when you wanted to do some self gratification with that money. I didn't just pay their way, they worked for it and are well on their way in life. One '67 blue Camaro convertible being sold after it had been restored still hurts. Now I have 6 grand kids that are worth it all, and my sons are doing very well.
The next Corvette will be what I want at a price I decide, I can do that now, no need to take anything less. I've missed a number of them for less than a thousand dollars but it will be my price or nothing. Then to I've been toying with the idea of going down to Lingenfelter, (70 miles), after I run out of warranty, and put the money into their 80 horse power bump. Just enough to keep the $70k Z06 in sight, close enough to see the look on their face at the very least.

Yeah don't get me wrong I've no major heartburn about setting the kids up in life, especially since they've damn near been the infamous "Perfect Little Angles". This is a long-term investment with dividends that can't be put on a balance sheet.

I rebuilt most of my cars (not restore) and to be honest I gave up keeping track of my expenses real fast.... Sure I am upside down with my cars..but I do not care...
What do I have to show for the vacations I took last year...?? not a thing ..well maybe a pile of digital pics.. The cars still give me pleasure "On Demand"... they are not profit centers they are satisfaction centers...

Matt Dude, if I could have got my Buddy over to eye it up I would have given you the $5500 you were asking straight-up. Personally I would have put the buy-now at $7500 and the opening at $5000 just to see what would happen, but I know you were in a hurry.
I hope everything works out for you and the happy new owner. $5500 in the condition you described and based on the pictures was more then fair to both sides of the transaction. I don't think most of the whinners ever saw the pics, which can make a big difference. I am glad you got more then you originally asked.
