I have a 98 Vette. I received a notice from GM the lock on my steering
column was defective and needed to be removed or the wheel might lock up and
accelerate and cause a crash. I took it to the dealer and had it "fixed." It
was fine for a couple of weeks but now my cat will not go more than a few
feet without shutting off. I get a message the I need to service the
steering column lock.
I'm REALLY upset. The car was fine for all these years until this. I wish I
never took it in! What can be done? Now, how can I ever trust this car? Any
advice?

Sorry to hear about your cat. ;-)
The day after I had the steering column recall done on
my '99 a few years ago, every electronic system went
haywire (and everything on this car is electronic).
After replacing (out of warrantee) the HVAC control,
Power Control Module, both Brake Control Modules,
windshield washer button, and the gas tank sending
units, they eventually (a year later) discovered a
loose connector that appears to have been causing all
the problems. However, the only problem I didn't have
was a "service the steering column lock" message.

Sounds like they messed it up to me. I'd call 'em and tell them they
need to pay for a flatbed so they can fix it right this time. Or maybe
try a different dealer if they're awkward.
Yeah it's BS and this blows... bottom line... I'm not sure I am going to
bother with the C6... which is even more chock full of electronics :).

Neither will my cat, he falls into another nap every time. But he
virtually never accelerates.

At this point the dealer is claiming that the problem was not caused by the
steering lock removal. Event though the error message say's to service the
column lock and I never had that sort of message since I bought the car in
'98. They said the switch that triggers error message might have gone bad
and that GM is not going to warranty the whole car just because they did a
recall on the steering wheel lock.
Here the recall caused the problem and GM will only pay to half fix it?
Anyone out there know the best way to appeal this to GM? Being that this is
so outrageous should I take this to the Press (consumer reporters)? I'm
really disgusted with Chevy. Is it the dealership's fault or should I go
after GM? They tell me GM won't pay for anything except the removal of the
locking pin. The side effects of the recall are my problem.
BTW, I had to have it towed to the dealer at my expense as well.

Lawyer.
did the car work before you brought it in? Yes?
did it work after you brought it in? No?
Wonder what a judge would say.
And you saying it has less impact than Smith of Smith, Smith, Jones, and Lee
Assoc. sending a letter.
It has nothing to do with GM and warranty, it has to do with the dealer
messing up your car, period. He messed it up, he has to fix it, or pay to
have it fixed at an independent party.

Good point. They're trying to shift the focus of liability off themselves.

It is a known problem with the C5 that GM fails to admit, a class action
lawsuit is really needed for it.

Well, before the Vette I had a Dodge Viper and that was real simple set up
and had to Lemon Law it there were so many problems. And the service at
Dodge was even worse than with Chevy. Then before the Viper I had a Cadillac
Allante' another car that was in the shop every other month. But the service
at Cadillac was fantastic.

First off they should have given you a copy of the bill that they charged
off to GM for their warranty work. Keep that, you're going to need it. My 98
was back in the dealer once for a free oil change. They did the column lock
fix, and changed the driver side seat upholstery without asking me. A few
weeks later on a hot summer day cruising down an interstate it shut down.
Coasted to the side of the road and restarted it, put it in gear and it
would just move a foot or so and shut off and set all kinds of messages and
codes. Flat bed to a near by dealer and a week later they had it fixed. The
bill was $800 plus and it was fixed well enough that it's still running fine
after 5 years. They replaced a computer and if you need the numbers I can
get what was replaced from the current owner. After kicking it around for
awhile I gave up on getting any money back as I was 26,000 out of warranty.
On the next deal for another Corvette after all the dickering was done I
knocked $800 off the deal and said no deal without that deduction, they took
it. In this case much easier than getting a lawyer involved.
