Are the dealers getting sticker out of the new Vette, or is there some room
to haggle?  I'd like to get the basic model Vette expect that I might get an
automatic so the wife can drive it, haven't made a decision on this yet. :-)

Thanks,
Jack

Don't know where you are at but they are being sold under MSRP. Don't even
think about the 6 speed, it won't out drive the latest auto. Plus it has to
be put in reverse through the sponge gate or it will kill and/or damage your
battery. Not a big thing if you and your wife are perfect. Do get the Z51
handling package.

Good luck

Apparently there are several grumbles about the C6 which may account for my
strategy about buying a C5 coming back to bite me on the @$$.

Within a year of when the C5 was introduced, C4 prices started sliding, to
the point that I bought a nice '91 coupe in July of '98 for less than
$12,000.00.  Yes, the owner had to get out from under a car note, but even
without this circumstance, the car was selling in the $15K range.

I figured the same thing would happen with the C5.  NOT.

As crazy as it sounds, the closeout '04 C5 was selling in Nashville for less
than $35K new, I guess because the dealers thought they needed to ditch the
cars.  In the classified ads this morning, several '02 C5's are listed for
$32K to $33K.  '99 should have been down to maybe $20K or less by now if my
strategy had worked.  They're selling for $25K.

What are C5 prices doing in other parts of the U.S.?

They are NOT falling like a Rock in the Mid Atlantic area either...
I too expected the C5's to take more of a "hit" they thave  so far
have taken...  ???

I am in the Market for a Used C5....just looking for the rigth car
(6 speed required...and NOT  a coupe, or Black. in color...at or about
the right price... (lol)

In other words I am looking for a Ragtop, a FRC...or a Z06...any color
but Black...

If they do not fall much lower within the next year I will switch my
search for a Mid Year Coupe...

At least around here (midwest) they're asking for $5K to $10K over MSRP
if they think the customer looks like a mark, but the major dealers are
selling at $500 to $1000 under as of a couple of months ago and I've
seen ads for coupes at $2000 under. I got my convertible (built to
order) at $2500 under after lots of negotiating. Coupes are being
discounted a bit more, check the ads for the big Corvette specialists -
especially the ones big enough to keep the cars in stock.

All due respect to Dad, I drove both auto and stick and personally I
like the 6-speed better. Of course this is a very subjective choice. The
Tremec gearbox is not the smoothest but it's not bad, either, and is
smoothing out considerably as the car breaks in. The clutch is more
difficult than most. The stick-shift feels much more responsive than did
the auto I drove and, in my opinion, will out perform the auto if driven
right. I have a video of a 10-mph rollon between a C6 stick and an auto,
and the stick leaps ahead and has several car lengths on the auto within
a couple of hundred yeards. (Next year's 6-speed auto might be a
different story.)

Yes, you do have to put the 6-speed in reverse when you park the car.
That's what turns off the keyless ignition and locks the steering
column. If you fail to do that it's like leaving the ignition on -
you'll run down the battery eventually, but that's all. If you shut off
the car and don't do that the little text display on the panel reminds
you, "SHIFT TO REVERSE." For me it became automatic within a few drives.

I also drove a Z51 and found it a bit hard for daily use on urban Kansas
roads (but then I'm 52 and my own chassis is a bit less forgiving these
days). I opted for the F55 (magnetic ride) and am very pleased with it,
the car's quite livable for daily usage but firms up nicely if driven
aggressively. And the active roll control really works, the car corners
very flat.

Thanks for all the information, I really appreciate it.  Just starting my
research and want to learn as much about the new Vette as I can.

Enjoy your search.

The Chevrolet website has most of the specs you'll want.

The following major Corvette specialists (among many others) have good
websites:

  Kerbeck - http://www.kerbeck.com
large inventory online, offers right up front, return calls reliably
but seldom answer email, weak followup
  Spitzer Chevrolet - http://www.corvetteconti.com
Lots of good market info on site, competitive pricing, took ages to
    respond to inquiry
  Knippelmier Chevrolet - http://www.knipplemierchevy.com
Newer Corvette specialist in the midwest, first-rate in every
    respect but weak site

I'm soo anal that would really bother me. When parked I ALWAYS have mine
in first gear
so the shifter is forward, and I make sure my front wheels are straight
when parked.
And be sure to close the cover on the cup holders. LOLOLOLOL

It's one of my pet peeves to gee a magazine shot with the shifter not in
first. :-)
