This one is starting to scare me.
Starting three months ago, I began getting traffic tickets in the mail from
cities in California. (I live in California.) The first one was from Santa
Ana, and I was ticketed for parking in a restricted zone. They had the
license number off one of my vehicles, but a description that didn't match
mine. I called them, they said it was a mistake and to throw the ticket
away.
The next month, I got ticketed by San Mateo for parking in a tow-away zone.
Frighteningly, they had my Vette license number, but the car description was
for a Honda. I called, but they said I would have to complete the back of
the ticket where I disputed it. I just wrote them a letter and said I
thought the ticketing officer could surely tell the difference between a
Honda and a Corvette, plus I had never been to their city. I asked them for
a reply so I would know if the ticket had been removed. They have never
responded.
Yesterday, I got another ticket from San Mateo/Haywood for evading a toll.
This time they have the license number of the Corvette, and a description as
a Chevy. The ticket also has a picture on it which is so bad I can barely
make anything out, but whatever it is it is not a Corvette. I figure I can
dispute it, but the disputes don't include anything about the DMV making an
error.
Responding to these is getting time-consuming and frustrating. They are
close enough to a description and license number that I figure they are
going to hit it pretty soon. I don't know who to write to get this
investigated. I don't know if the tickets are on my record and there is an
outstanding bench warrant for me. But, it looks like this is going to
happen every month, and I need to stop it.
I figure I'll write all my local and State Congress people, but I don't know
who to contact at DMV, nor who controls them (if anyone.) I'd appreciate
any ideas anyone might have.
No need to scare me more than I already am about being glitched in that
montrous system. I figure I'll end up having to change everything I can
including my sex to get away from these people.

Shades of yesteryear, Michigan got me like that, twice! One of them I had
written a check at the time I was to have done the dirty deed and was able
to prove I was 285 miles away at the time. The other one they had the number
wrong on my Corvette and I had noticed the Corvette with the number they
had, VH 0110 versus mine of VH 0010. The boobs still took me down town
before they let me look at the ticket and I had sold the Corvette 3 months
before the ticket was issued. The Corvette with the ticket had run up close
to 50 tickets that he had ignored, you think they might have thought it
could have been him.
Contest them in writing and send a self addressed envelope with a small form
where they can check one or the other as to whether it was dropped or not,
sign and return. Above all be nice and don't push their ability to think and
GET IT IN WRITING!!!

Guess they aren't too bright in Calif.? In MN they check the vehicle
make and contact the registered owner to see if you are missing a plate
when the offending car doesn't match the registered car.

People in California believe in letting the other guy take responsibility
for everything, even someone else's errors and misdirections. We're so dim,
we run around trying to take care of someone else's mistakes because we
don't know what to do against the monsters of bureaucracy. If it wasn't so
damned cold and wet in MN, I'd consider moving.

Spent one winter in Calif. Said if I was going to be that cold and wet,
at least I would like it to not be "gray". So here at least it's pretty
when it's cold and "wet". :-) And the summer makes you appreciate it!

Just remember that it's not only our time in getting these things fixed.
It's also our tax dollars at work since it takes 15-20 minutes of some
clerk's time to check out each one of these and dismiss the charge.
I've gone through this three times since 2000. Worst was a $ 271 ticket
for parking in a handicapped zone. Fortunately all were written locally.
Each time I've gone down to City Hall and waited while they checked DMV
records to see that I'm not the 'blue Honda' or 'yellow Acura.' None
were DMV errors. Each was written by a weak-eyed meter maid or a senior
citizen volunteer who couldn't transcribe the plate number correctly.

I think that if I didn't have a personalized tag, I'd toss the old tag and
apply for a lost/stolen tag so I could get rid of the number.
This sounds almost like someone has made a tag with your number (stole one
and changed a number or two) and is passing it around cars, or someone is
out to get you and reporting your number as the guilty one.
It probably won't stop until they catch the person with the other tag or you
change numbers.
The surest way is see a lawyer. A free way is to call your state
representative.

One thing for SURE.... I wouldn't go with the advice of
"It's a mistake throw the ticket away!!!" Or you will
find that your license has been suspended at the MOST
inopportune time!
I'd get something in writing and carry it around with me/car
for at least a year or so. These kind of things can dog you
for years if you are unlucky enough to get trapped in the
DMV circlejerk.

I hear you. I am limping from all the time I've spent kicking my own butt
on that one. The only excuse I have is that was the first ticket, and I had
no idea others would follow. Usually I hold onto things like that. In this
case, I just figured it was a one-time thing, so I made the mistake of
tossing it.
I haven't tossed anything since then, though.

I would of never thought much about this either
if I hadn't been caught in it once myself. :-)
