I need to replace the starter on my 96.  I have a Haynes manual for all the
good that does. Is it difficult  to change or should I just pay the $65 or
so labor and have it done?

If there is a sadist that will do your starter for $65 bucks I would
jump on it and take pictures while he does the work.
