I have been looking at the pre-70's Corvettes over the internet, the
ones with the flatter snout or the original style I think, and found
that some are actually Stingrays.
Is Stingray a variant of Corvette or is it a whole different model by
itself?
Confused....

Its not a model in and of itself ; think of it as a 'tradename' that
was used in the 1960's...then it was dropped for awhile...then it was
used again on Corvettes.

Not a model by its self, just a name added in 1963, and has been Sting Ray and
Stingray depending on the year....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Corvette is a fair history on the
Corvette.

It is the second generation or mid-year Chevrolet Corvette
built and marketed by Chevrolet.
1963 would see the introduction of the new Corvette Sting
Ray ...
started in 1963 and ended in 1967. 1963 would see the
introduction of the new Corvette Sting Ray coupé with its
distinctive split rear window and fake hood vents as well as
an independent rear suspension. The split rear window was
discontinued in 1964 due to safety concerns.

vettes started in 63 being a "Sting Ray" (two words)
then around 70 or so (could be wrong about the exact year)
they became a "Stingray" (one word).
Not sure exactly when they stopped putting the "Stingray"
badge on the car.
