GPS Nav in 2008

Any thoughts about the GPS/Nav option in a 2008? I have one on order.
Meantime I've been trying to download/read the manual to become familiar
with the options available before the car arrives (truth be told I'm
chomping at the bit and I figured that perhaps this might help me make
it through the wait). I have not been able to find out much about the
GPS/Nav unit, how it works, how you program it, what options are
available, etc. Any pointers would be helpful.

Thanks.

Beware.  I have a 2007 Cad and the GPS navigation sys. isn't worth a
plug nickle - and it was a $2,000.00 option.

Borrowed my sons $300.00 unit and it's good compared to the GM unit.
The big problem with the GM unit is that it can't find addresses and
streets that have been around for well over 20 years.

My thinking is that the data based on a CD is not at all up to date.
I'm working with my dealer on this problem.

Well considering that the order was already placed and this was part of
the order, the above doesn't help me at all...

Sounds like a data problem. My assumption is, and I believe I heard that
one needs to periodically update the data CD. I also assume that I'd be
starting off with up to date data.

Then again I was really looking for the manual or an explanation of it's
features - not just vague griping...

His is a 2007, how much more up to date does a 20 year old address need to be?

$2000?  I'll buy a better portable GPS unit for 1/4 the price and put the other $1500 in to the gas tank...

While his hardware may be a 2007 we don't know what data CD he is using.
I would hope it would also be a 2007 but I don't know. Then again I'd
suspect that even up to the minute data CDs might not have even 20 year
old addresses. All maps have errors and faulty data in them. Google
maps, for instance, still can't find my exact address and it's about as
up to date as any other.

However, still, the age of the data or gripes was not the question I
posed now was it?
> $2000?  I'll buy a better portable GPS unit for 1/4 the price and put

I would think that a portable GPS would not be as integrated (BTW I
believe the GPS/NAV was $1700 - not $2000 but close enough).

This weekend I was at an arts festival and they has some Infinity's all
with GPS systems. I played with them for a while and they were quite
nice. Interestingly one could type in an address and as I did certain
keys would become unavailable. I later figured out that they were
unavailable because based on my input so far, the GPS/NAV system
determined that they no longer applied. That was weird but it seemed to
work well nonetheless. I didn't try the voice activation though. And the
integration with everything else including options settings, radio, etc.
was well done. How is it on the vette?

And that's more of what I was looking for. First, for the manual so I
could just read about it's features and operations by myself. But also
for experience in *using* the thing not simply bitching that it's data
was old or that you can get a portable one cheaper. I mean how does that
help me?

Heck I would Keep the entire $2,000 in the bank....and IF I got lost
I'd stop and buy a cup of Joe and ask directions...

I admit I have a hard time asking directions BUT no way no how is
spending even $500 bucks for a GPS worth the money....

I have a Garmin Nuvi handheld that I use in my '04 coupe while my wife has a
built-in GM unit in her '05 Cadillac.

Both offer similar features that can search by address or by one of
thousands of pre-stored "points of interest" ranging from gas stations,
restaurants, shopping malls, hotels, etc. The Garmin does seem to have more
of these than the GM unit. The Garmin also allows for easy updating via the
internet as they periodically post updates to firmware, maps and features.
The GM unit requires the purchase of a new DVD to get the same type of
upgrades.

The GM unit will play DVD's (while the car is parked; not while moving). Not
sure if that is a major plus, but it is an obvious difference.

With both of mine I have not found any errors in the maps, not found a
location I was looking for. Having the Nav systems has been very handy,
especially when on trips. For those who are directionally challenged (my
wife included) it is an invaluable addition.

As to the money spent, the in-dash just adds more value to the car at time
of resale. How many of us, when looking for our cars (or for a new car to
add to the stable) look for the with the best combination of low miles, most
options and the right drivetrain combination? Having the Nav will be a plus.

As for the initial cost ... it won't hurt near as much after the first few
payments!  :-)

Again (for the dense among you), vague griping was not requested -
thoughts yes - vague gripping no. IOW surprisingly enough I was looking
for information - not bitching. And even above I did say "I was really

Did it ever occur to your little pea brain there sonny that 1) I am

The more you run over a dead cat, the flatter it gets.

THAT'S JUST THE POINT!  YOU SHOULD BE...

You might consider starting your sub par command of the English language.
You are betraying either a lack of education or intellect by relying upon
these vulgarities to express yourself, which is it?

Through whichever happenstance, (I'll call it Karma, you are proof of that,
you can refer to it as bullshit) you have been blessed with the burden of
being repulsively unattractive and overweight to boot, to top that off you
have chosen to complement that poor hand with an extremely rude and equally
offensive personality.  Wow.  Enjoy that, the irony brings great joy to
others.  You are the guy people see and smile about while they say to
themselves "poetic justice".

If you are still bragging about publishing your name and unflattering
picture all over the internet along with your nasty attitude and foul
language, Hmmm, well that is your choice.

Andrew DeFaria, you remind me of Thom Lyons...   Maybe one day you'll figure
it out...

You might enjoy this other bonehead, he insists on plastering his "real
name" and picture all over the internet along with his generally "better
left unsaid" points of view.  It is pathetic and sad, but in a sadistic way
it is funny, "poetic justice" ya know.

While I do agree with what you say, what about all this "Diversity" &
"Equality" crap.  If it is right for others, then it is supposed to be
right for a woman.  However, when wrong, then wrong for everyone
regardless of gender.

Well I do believe you said "There are women that frequent this group
and you SHOULD act like a man instead of a troll and respect them."

This then thereby infers that his behavior is acceptable to you if it
were "not" for the women who might frequent the forum and only
unacceptable because there are women who may frequent here.

While I realize that this maybe a some what salient point most have a
hard time grasping, or quite possibly even semantics, there is a point
to be made.  If women want all their "rights" & "equalities" that they
are constantly nattering on about, especially in the workplace -- then
there can only be one standard of behavior that does not take their
gender into consideration.  Again, good for the Goose, good for the
Gander.

Now if you had simply said his behavior was unacceptable without any
qualifiers to gender or the ever infamous kiddie factor, I would have
both 100% agreed & not brought up this point.

It is all part of the great neutering of America dontcha know!

This group is not capable of accepting (you idiot! It's not except!)
or rejecting any language at all. This is Usenet. You don't have the
power to censor people. Then again I see you're still struggling with
the difference between except and accept...

I guess you don't believe that respect is earned. For if you bestow
respect onto a gender merely because they possess vaginas, then you
cheapen the concept of respect and show that you are not only stupid -
but a pussy yourself!

I didn't initially come here to debate things, nor am I here to win a
debate. However I fully believe on calling a spade a spade. I did not
start this argument - I came in here asking for information. When people
responded rudely I responded in kind.

Apologizing in advance for the top posting ...

Not true Andy, people did respond rudely to you initially. What they did was give you opinion when you were seeking information. You did not take kindly to others opinions on Nav systems and began responding in rude tones which have continually increased to the point where now you are acting like a total dick.

Repeatedly you have responded to others that "no one" can control you or what you wish to post and yet your original issue with a few of the other posters was that you could not control how they chose to respond and your criticism for not answering in the manner you wanted.

Hmmmm ... seems hypocritical to expect others to do what _you_ want while flaunting in their face that you are a "free spirit" and will post what and when including assaulting others with profanity ... just because you can.

I'm sure you'll have some unreasoned response to this as well but myself and others here see what is really going on.

We know for whom the bell "trolls", it "trolls" for thee.

Why thank you but that's not exactly how it happened. I responding
saying I was not looking for their off the topic opinions rather I was
looking for information. They then began the escalation...

Check your facts jack! I never stated nor thought that I could *control*
how they responded, I just said that how they responded was not what I
was looking for.

That's because you're striking down your own strawman! Again, I didn't
attempt to control what they posted, nor did I say that they can't post
it - I just said it was not what I was looking for. Apparently you can't

My typo. People did NOT respond rudely to you (as you well know). People gave you responses such as (and I will paraphrase here) "save your money, don't buy the GPS" or "get a portable model instead" or "I've not been happy with my GPS and here is why ..."

In each of these cases you berated these people for not giving you what you wanted, which was GPS specs, information or access to the manual (which you did get rather early on in this thread) but instead gave you their opinion.

It is dishonest for you to say otherwise, but do what you want because other readers of this thread and this newsgroup already know the truth.

Got any other research you want someone else to do for you are can you go now?

I had spoken to people like that it might not have gotten to where we are today but I went back and looked at this entire thread. You immediately started putting people down for giving opinion and not owners manuals and instructions. The first -bombs dropped came from you. Your responses ensured that things would escalate.

Here is a quote from your post of Dec. 8:

"Again (for the dense among you), vague griping was not requested -
thoughts yes - vague gripping no. IOW surprisingly enough I was looking
for information - not bitching. And even above I did say "I was really
looking for...". Did you not see/get that or are you just being
argumentative? Cause if you want an argument I'd be happy to oblige..."

Looks more like you picking a fight than just letting someone know that you were looking for different information.

From later in that same day:

"Did it ever occur to your little pea brain there sonny that 1) I am
grown up already, 2) I was asking for information - something a grown up
seeks and 3) griping and bitching are the dominion of immature,
non-grown up (actually not matured yet - age is not always a sign of
maturity or intellect) people?
Probably not. I mean after all you don't even have a real name yet!"

Instead of paraphrasing, which is inaccurate, why not quote, which would
be more accurate? (But I see you managed to f.ck that up too - see below).

Heaven forbid, I asked for specs! What so ever made me think that I
should get those?!? Did you miss the part about me thanking the guy for
giving me a pointer to the actual specs? You know, what I asked for in
the first place?

It is not dishonest of me to say otherwise because otherwise is indeed

When the question was "Where's the manuals?" opinions were the wrong answer.

Again, had they answered the questions there would be no escalation.
Hell I didn't even really mind their opinions either but merely stated I
was looking for more than just opinions. You make claims but provide no
evidence. I will not address such claims.

Ah so he can do research and actually pull out a quote... Talk about
intellectually dishonest however! Hmmm... Did you ever think that
perhaps the word "Again" signifies that there was something before this?
Oh no, let's now quote that. That would be wrong...
> From later in that same day:

Again, don't cha think that a statement like "I am grown up already"
might refer to a jab such as "Grow up" uttered by the guy before me? I
don't know about you but most normally thinking people would call the
guy saying "Grow up" as the one picking the fight.

So let's review, you take quotes after the argument has already
escalated and then say that I was picking the fight to start with!?!
Anybody else see what's wrong with that picture?

Talk about "proof there for all to see"! If we examine this little bit
of proof we would find that 1) you never addressed the charges (i.e.
dismissive) and 2) you actually did blame me for this argument anyway
(i.e. "I wouldn't have taken the shot if you behaved differently'). Yes,
the truth is there for all to see - you did exactly as I would have
guessed - you were dismissive and blamed me for what you did. Two big

The topic is about YOU !!!   I guess you are proud of yourself because
you managed to take a somewhat quiet newsgroup and get many to reply
to your posts.  It doesn't matter to you that it is in anger because
you crave the "extra" attention you get that you know wouldn't happen
otherwise if you post normal things like others here.

I bet your wife (if you still have one) loves your views.  And you
must be a great role model to your daughter.

Last I love the nonsense you talk about Common ploys.  Look in the
mirror buddy.

Yep.  The witless fool thinks people are still reading his ranting

Again, if he had followed his own advice he wouldn't be responding and
complaining about seeing my "clueless raft".

And ya know, there's nothing forcing you to read this thread. No, it
clear, Key et. al. are just dying to continue reading and that such much
more about them than me...

Bottom line is many people claim to <plonk> and kill file but don't...

No, the topic, as indicated by the subject - remember the subject? - as
about a GPS Nav unit in a 2008 vette. The *drift* has become an attack
on me. And each time I address your points (e.g. I need a vette - I
don't need a vette, I'm a virgin, with a daughter, etc.) you (and
others) instead change the topic to some other insult that you hurl at
me. This is precisely because I've addressed your issues squarely and
you have no refutation to submit.

Couldn't care less...

I don't crave the attention at all! Want prove? Simple stop responding
with yet more silly insults and I guarantee you I won't respond. My
query has long since been answered and I even took the time to thank the
person who read the question and answered it squarely.

Wife?!? I've learned! Wife's are worth it!

Actually, idiot, a role model for a girl would be a woman.

At least I address the issues you raise instead of cowardly switch
topics (and hide behind handles...)

That is a rather off-the-wall sexist & extremely myopic view of what
exactly a "Role Model" can & should be.  Most when refer to
Role-Models are talking about values & actions to be admired &
emulated.  These are not gender specific things.

No it's my opinion. Girls tend to want to be like their mothers, not
their fathers as boys tend to want to be like their fathers, not their
mothers. You can't seriously say you haven't noticed such a trend!

A rather myopic, sexist and dare I say ignorant opinion. Of course, it may
the best thing for your daughter to not see her father as a role model as it
would most likely have a devastatingly negative effect upon her.

Let's hope she grows up acting decently to strangers instead of assaulting
them with little to no provocation.

believe it is...

... even if the strangers started the assault. I see, you wish for me to
role model to my daughter to be a pussy and let people insult and walk
all over me. Right. Well all I can say is that I disagree with your
assessment.

No, but I do molest *your daughter* often... :-P

(AKA if you make an irrelevant and quite rude assertion and ask such a
vile question intended on attempting to strike hard at me, supposedly
committing a highly illegal, offensive and vulgar act - all the while
attempting to play one of the "nice guys" and assert that *I'm* the rude
one! Ha! - then don't be surprised when I come right back at cha the
same way! Oh, and BTW, I stopped doing your wife because she became a
dried up, ugly douche bag and so I switched to your daughter. I still
wonder how you can continue to do your wife - if you do anymore at
all... Now go f.ck yourself you sick, sick person... Had you had the
balls to reveal your true identity and ask such a vile question in
person I'd be having you in court by now for slander you f.cking idiot!
Of course, you got no balls...)

While you're opinion it has been disproved in valid peer-reviewed
scientific studies.  Under your theory if a female child's mother is
dead, they themselves would aspire to be expired.

Not really, in case you haven't been out & about much lately, today's
world has become very gender non-specific in a lot of things.  I'm
quite sure your aware of things like single fathers who raise
non-butch daughters aren't you?

Like... References please...

Yet another non sequitur. I said "girls *tend* to want to be like their
mothers". Where and when did that turn into "girls *must* be like their
mothers..."? Perhaps one of those nameless peer-reviewed scientific
studies... Here's the shortcut - "tend" does not mean "always".
Therefore it does follow that in cases where a female child's mother is
dead one (who has 1/2 a brain) might conclude that said child would
probably not aspire to be expired... Geeze...
