Hey all, just wondering if anyone has any idea why the low fan blower inside
my 1998 Malibu LS has stopped working (but the higher output positions 3, 4
and 5 are blowing air just fine), and any idea what it might cost to get it
fixed? Winter is almost upon us Canadians, but I find the heat output on
the higher levels is just way too much!
Many thanks for any responses.

It's the blower resistor. Common problem on Malibus.
I'm surprised yours lasted this long. I don't know how much it costs to
get it repaired here in Canada...mine was repaired under warranty.
You can do it yourself if you're mechanically inclined (I'm not).
Here's the text of a message Chad Gonia made last year about changing
this yourself.
To replace the board...
It is located in the area under the glove compartment. It is accessed
by removing the black panel directly below the glove compartment.
Before removing panel remove the light bulb that illuminates the floor.
Recline the front passenger seat all the way back, shut all of the car
doors to allow the bulb to cool off. Enter the car from the left rear
door and climb over the reclined seat to the front passenger floor to
remove the bulb.
***Remove the bulb--on my first change out I almost started a small fire
with the bulb getting the panel insulation too hot--after the larger
panel is removed, the panel closer to the door hangs allowing the bulb
to come in contact with the insulation. The larger black panel is held
in place by a few screws. After removing the screws, carefully remove
the panel. This operation may require you to flex the panel a bit to
pull it out.
Next, locate the blower motor. You will see a wire harness plugged into
the motor--using a small flat head screwdriver, unlatch the clip holding
the harness in place and pull it back with your free hand. The other
clip goes to the resistor...remove it with the flat head screwdriver.
Remove the resistor--you will probably need a right angle socket driver
or a very small box wrench to remove the bolts holding the resistor in
place. One of the bolts is placed at a very odd angle making is just
about impossible to remove--trust me it can be done--where there is a
will there is a way!!!
Pull the old board and replace with the new one. The new board is a
different size and color--it will also fit a bit snugger. Also
something to be aware of...the new board will have a different part
number.
Good luck with the repair. If you have any questions, contact me at

Its an easy job with the right tool you need a 1/4 in drive 5mm socket
with flex head. The blower motor resistor costs 26.80 Cdn last year.
Unfortunately its a dealer item.

Its actually a 5.5mm bolt ....The last post where you got detialed
instructions was too long and you have too many steps you dont
need....Just pull the seat back take out the fan motor...the blower mod
is up in the corner next to the fan there are three screws and
electrical connector....the front two screws are easy to get out but the
third is a pain...if you have to just break the old one out and get the
third one after its out....you only need to put in the two front screws
it seals it just fine....then reverse the steps takes about 15 minutes
once you get the hang of it....As far as the the front cover of the dash
no screws that i know of just two clips and a plastic pushin
retianer...And starting a fire with the lightbulb? The only way to do
that is to hod it there lond enough to set a fire....Or you can do it
the way the other guys said and waste 20 mins before you even get
started...

What's not working your blower fan for the AC/heater ? If so does it
work on any speeds?
I can help you....
