The Passlock sensor is in the keylock outer housing, it's what the wires
plug into. A magnet on the lock cylinder is what triggers the sensor.
You will have to do a learn procedure for the car to learn the new keylock
sensor in the housing so it will start. Passlock system turns off the fuel
injectors.
The procedure is....
Try to start, it will crank but not fire. Release the key but leave it in
the ON position.
The security light will be on. After 10 min. the security light will go OFF.
Turn OFF the ignition for 5 seconds then try to start engine again. Release
the key leaving it in the ON position again for the 10 min. cycle.
A cold one can be drank during the waiting period (hehehehe)
Book says 3 times or 30 min. until the Security light doesn't come on and
the car starts. Some learn in 2 tries, some in 4. I have 2 Malibu's in the
family fleet and have had them do both.

Thank you for your response.
I don't know if we just got lucky or what ... but the car started right
up the first time (and continued to run.)
We did follow through with the "learning" procedure just in case, as we
didn't want to turn the car back over to our daughter and have her
panic if she had problems with it.
I think all is well now, even though the locksmith I spoke to after my
husband had torn the lock apart was VERY uncomfortable with our 'do it
yourself" attempt. He was afraid that when using force to release the
lock cylinder from it's outer housing that he may have damaged some of
the other components further down the line. His fears were unfounded,
as nothing was damaged in the process.
If we had only known that a locksmith could have come and fixed it
without our having to tow it home first, we could have probably saved a
little money. Towing was $113.00 for the 16 miles we had to tow it,
and the replacement part was $109.00. :-(
