My '98 Malibu with 3.1L has around 274,000 kms and I have been getting 30-31
MPG, mostly highway driving with about 10 minutes of stop and go city
traffic every day. In about 2 weeks it will have 3 new coil packs on it, so
I'm hoping the mileage will increase a bit. A friend at work told me his
'97 Lumina used to get 36-38 MPG with the same drivetrain.

GM did something right. I had an 84 pontiac 6000, got about 25mpg. Also had
a 94 sonoma, got about 22mpg, but with it, didnt matter the load or the
terrain.
I have heard horror stories from people with other vehicles, including
imports.

With today's fuels your getting the best you can now.
My '99 Yukon lost 1-2 mpg highway, 'bu's have lost also.
It's the E 10 gas, used to be the seasonal oxygenated stuff, now the loss is
year 'round.
