The power mirror control on my 03 Malibu is acting up and i'm wondering if
anyone else has had this problem and what the solution would be.
The up / left / right mirror movement works , but the down doesn't , on
either driver or passenger sides. I'm assuming that it must be something in
the switch rather than the mirror motors as neither works.
If the switch has to be replaced , is there a site that might show me how i
go about getting at the switch?? If not would a Haynes manual show this?
Thanks to all.

Sounds to me like a switch problem alright. I would suspect the driver's
switch first. I do not know where you might get access information and I
rather doubt the Haynes manual would help. They are pretty good though and
certainly worth having if you do any servicing or repair on your car.
Sometimes the Chiltons or other manuals have information that the others do
not. You might be lucky enough for someone at a dealer or body shop to give
you some advice. Otherwise you need to acquire a factory service manual.

Well ,,when it gets warmer and wayyyy less snow , i guess i'll start
snooping around and see what screws hold what in place and see if they have
those funky little clips that hold the door panels on like in the old days
,, and find out how much the switch goes for.
Always makes for a fun Saturday afternoon :)

Yes, I'd suspect the switch. You get a new one
at the dealer.
Chilton's might describe the door panel.
It is usually a snap fit of some sort, I doubt you have
to take the whole panel off.
I replaced one on a different car, and it was strictly
snap fits, just need a screwdriver to pry with.

That is a real good idea. If you examine the new switch it should give you a
real good idea of how it is fastened in.

If I remember the one I did, it was a plastic
area that the switch was in. I think I had to
snap the plastic panel out, then I could see how
to remove the switch.

I looked at my 2001.
It is a snap fit panel that the windows, window
lock-out switch and mirrors switch is in.
Just take a screwdriver and pry at the front
and then the back of the panel. Be gentle
no lot of force, and it should pop out.
Then you can see the inside and there may
be a clip holding the switch in.

One caution... There may be a hot terminal/wire on
the panel. Be careful not to short anything.
It might be a good idea to disconnect the ground
on the battery (- terminal).

If it is anything like the 1998 design, it just snaps into place with 3
clips. You should be able to gently pry it out with a flat blade
screwdriver. Once the switch assembly is loose, you just unplug the
connector(s). When I bought my car used, the switch assembly was loose.
After a few months, I decided to replace the factory front speakers and when
I pulled the door panel off, I noticed a small plastic part fall to the
ground. Upon closer inspection of the back side of the panel, I could see
one of the three clips broken off the switch assembly.
But like I said, this was on a '98, I have never seen an '03 Malibu
interior. It may or may not be different.
