2002 Malibu surging in 2nd gear at high RPMs

2002 Malibu 3.1 V6 auto - not every time but happening more often
since the weather got up to around 80 - under heavy throttle, in
second gear only, the engine will start surging badly when the engine
gets over 4500 RPMs. Plugs and fuel filter have been changed.

Sounds like high rpm cut out to prevent overreving the engine.

Possible but what could be causing it to take affect at 4500-5000 RPMs - and
it only seems to do it since the weather got warmer. Normally the 2 - 3
shift occurs around the 5500 RPM redline.
