'98 Malibu LS Steering Wheel

Hi, on occasion, mostly when going around left corners, my 1998 Malibu LS
steering wheel makes a kind of soft grinding noise... and sometimes when I
am then straightening it out afterward... this has just started about 2
weeks ago and doesn't seem to be affecting much of anything.  I took it to
GM and they couldn't duplicate the noise during a test drive (just like a
bad dog won't do the tricks when your friends come over).  They assure me it
is safe and the truth is I don't even notice it most of the time, but as
soon as I am parking or not playing the stereo, you an usually tell...

Any thoughts on what it might be, or what I might be able to do?

PS - thanks to all the suggestions I had earlier regarding my low speed fan
blower problem....

this is probably not your problem, but:

my friend was going around 5-10 mph, and when he went to hit the brakes, the pedal snapped off and he rear-ended the lady.  I'm not really sure what it was, but whenever he turned fairly sharply to the right the tires would rub against something that had gotten bent out of place as a result of the accident - he wasn't going fast, so apparently it doesn't take much to bend whatever was scraping the tire - see if you can notice anything under the car that looks unusually close to the tire or anything the tire might be rubbing against - did you change your tire size or hit anything lately (even as little as hitting the wall while parking)
